American Society of Neurorehabilitation - ASNR Improve the lives of people with neurological disorders through advances in basic & clinical research

The rehabilitation and management of patients with chronic neurological disabilities became sufficiently specialized to warrant the establishment of a society dedicated to advancing clinical care and basic and clinical research in this growing field. The American Society of Neurorehabilitation (ASNR) was established in 1990 to meet those needs. Professionals with an interest in the scientific basi

c of neural repair and neurorehabilitation or the management of the neurologic patient are invited to apply for membership in the Society. Active membership is open to all health care professionals and scientists interested in neurorehabilitation and in promoting the Society's goals. The ASNR promotes:

Specialty training and identification of those with expertise in neurorehabilitation
Professional and public education
Basic science and clinical research in neurorehabilitation
Communication and collaboration with people with neurological disorders related organizations
Mission of Neurorehabilitation Research

Become a Member of ASNR

As a member, you will enjoy the following benefits:
- Subscription to Journal of Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair
- Access to the Online Membership Directory
- Involvement in the development and promotion of standards of care and practice guidelines
- Networking opportunities with other neurorehabilitation professionals
- Reduced rates on continuing medical education activities
- Unique educational opportunities through the Annual Meeting and workshops
- Access to Journal Watch - monthly resource of rehabilitation related article

Congratulations to Dr. Seth Hays on his recent election to the ASNR Board of Directors! We're looking forward to working with him in this new role. Dr. Hayes is a Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Texas at Dallas where he is developing novel closed-loop vagus nerve stimulation-based therapies for stroke and other neurological disorders. He has also been a valuable member of ASNR's Education Committee since 2020.

A knee injury during her days as a collegiate athlete started ASNR Board of Directors Member Dr. Lara Boyd on her path to becoming a researcher in neurorehabilitation. In our latest blog article, Dr. Boyd discusses her career, her current research on the activation of different populations of neurons in motor learning, and her thoughts on grand challenges and opportunities in the field in the form of building trust in science, battling mis-information, and leveraging big data to make new discoveries.

Remaining physically active is important for people with neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis, but it can be difficult for clinicians to predict which patients are likely to meet daily step goals. A recent study identified backward walking as a clinically relevant predictor of achieving daily step goals that could be used to inform interventions and promote physical activity in this population.

Identifying biomarkers that can predict functional outcomes after a stroke could help guide treatment strategies and uncover new potential treatment targets. This recent study found that lower levels of serum soluble low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (sLRP1) were associated with improved functional outcomes after acute ischemic stroke, highlighting the potential value of measuring and targeting sLRP1 to enhance recovery.

Working in neurorehabilitation provides opportunities to make new discoveries, translate research, and provide life-changing care for people with neurological injuries.

For ASNR Member Dr. Mohammed Sbai, a personal connection with traumatic brain injury spurred his decision to undergo a major career pivot. This has led him down a fulfilling path, which has included founding a much-needed neurorehabilitation clinic in Morocco to provide specialized services for people with neurological conditions.

Dr. Sbai shares the story of his career and the influences that have shaped his work in our latest blog article:

Prior studies on the effectiveness of tDCS after stroke have had mixed results. One contributing factor may be the use of the same intervention parameters in all patients despite heterogeneity in stroke lesion, initial impairments, and other factors.

In this recent feasibility and pilot trial, authors used a patient-tailored tDCS intervention and saw greater improvements (versus sham) in recovery of upper extremity impairment in individuals with acute stroke. This approach could be valuable for larger trials.
