Metropolitan Mosquito Control District is using drones to treat wetlands this year, and we want to ensure residents of St. Louis Park are aware in case you see their staff and drones out and about.

Drones allow them to access more mosquito-breeding sites while improving staff safety. Things to know:

🦟 Drones apply a dry granule to areas of standing water with an active ingredient that targets mosquito larvae. The materials are not harmful to people, pets or wildlife.

🦟 Drones fly 150 - 200 ft above a wetland when completing an application.

🦟 The pilot will always maintain eye contact with the drone. If you see one, MMCD staff are nearby.

🦟 Areas near where the drones are taking off will have a large orange sign that says “Mosquito Control Drone Use.” All staff will be wearing yellow high-visibility vests that say “Public Health Mosquito Control.”

🦟 They do their best not to fly over anyone’s private property, but sometimes wetlands cannot be accessed otherwise. Staff may knock on doors of houses that are nearby active drone treatments to notify residents.

Responsible firearm ownership starts with safe storage.

Over the past several weeks, we have received multiple reports of fi****ms stolen from vehicles, including both locked and unlocked cars. Leaving a firearm unsecured in a vehicle creates an opportunity for theft and increases the risk that it could later be used in a violent crime.

Help protect your community and your property by following these safety tips:

✅ Always lock your vehicle
✅ Never leave valuables in plain sight or unattended in your vehicle
✅ Bring your firearm inside and store it securely in a locked safe
✅ Keep a record of your firearm’s serial number to assist law enforcement if it is ever stolen

Taking a few simple precautions can help prevent theft and keep fi****ms out of the wrong hands.

Got storm damage? Thinking about home improvements this year? Contractor scams are common and can cost unsuspecting homeowners thousands of dollars.

They often arise after natural disasters, when “storm-chasing” contractors descend on an area and pressure emotional homeowners into quick decisions and immediate cash payments. Other methods include unsolicited door-to-door offers and phone calls. Red flags of a contractor scam include demands for upfront payment, no written contract, permit skirting (asking you to obtain the permit), and high-pressure tactics.

To protect yourself, follow these steps:

1. Seek recommendations: get referrals from people you trust.

2. Verify credentials: check the contractor's credentials at the Minnesota Secretary of State and Better Business Bureau websites.

3. Payment methods: Pay by check or with a credit card to keep a record of the payment. Never pay in cash!

4. Obtain estimates: get three or more written estimates.

5. Confirm license and insurance: ensure the contractor provides proof of their license and insurance.

6. Contact your insurance: if you've suffered storm damage, reach out to your insurance company for an independent inspection.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure a safer experience when hiring contractors.
