🇵🇭 *** COVER REVEAL! *** Before a pan discuss I was on ended, I did a surprise cover reveal for guests at the Filipino American International Book Festival at the San Francisco Public Library last weekend!

*** Drumroll! *** Introducing a new chapter book series featuring a Filipino family and two cousins who became best friends, NINGNING & GABBY! Published by Capstone. To be released Aug. 2027.

In this series, Ningning, her mom (Nanay), and her dad (Tatay) immigrated to the United States recently. They are staying with her Tito (uncle) and Tita (aunt) and their daughter, Gabby. Ningning & Gabby have fun and adventures while Gabby helps Ningning adjust to her new life in a new place and Ningning helps Gabby, who has yet to visit the Philippines, learn more about her culture, heritage, and extended family. This series is dedicated to my cousin who helped me when I was in Ningning’s shoes.

An exclusive e-advanced reader copy was provided to happily cheering guests at the festival. Stay tuned for preorder information soon! I can’t wait for you to meet Ningning and Gabby and enjoy adventuring, learning, and having fun with them!

Today’s MDL tip is all about our transcripts! All documents in MDL have been transcribed, whether they are handwritten or typed. Just click on the blue “Transcript” button below the viewer and it will be visible.

Here are two pro tips that we at MDL follow when working with our transcripts:
-Have two browser windows open at the same time: one showing the scan and one showing the transcript side-by-side.
-Use a text find shortcut (i.e. CTRL+F) to search the transcript for specific names or terms. It will highlight the corresponding words so you can jump directly to them.

This is particularly helpful when you are going through a document that is several hundred pages long, like this journal kept by Randolph M. Probstfield of Moorhead. Here we can see Randolph’s original entry for October 27, 1897, on the left and the transcript on the right. Both provide details about life on the farm that fall season, including these gems: “Papa worked at root house. Andie dug parsnips… Walter plowed… Arthur butchered sheep A.M. & plowed P.M.”

Thanks to the Northwest Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University Moorhead for sharing this journal. Read the full volume at https://collection.mndigital.org/catalog/mhd:4858

MDL is excited to share a newly digitized set of student newspapers called Northern Light. The Northern Light was a student newspaper created in 1966 by the students of Thief River Falls Junior College. The college, now called Northland Community & Technical College, has kept archives of the paper from January 1966 through May 1988. In these issues, students wrote their perspectives on current events, showed their creativity, and demonstrated to readers how they interacted with their world.
