Yesterday, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and I celebrated the opening of the new trail connection at Ole Olson Park. Sen. Bobby Joe Champion and I secured $3 million from the state for this project back in 2020.

This trail connection is not the end, but the start. I’m going to continue working with everyone and fight for state dollars at the Capitol so we can continue our journey of building a better community. I am committed to this work, and I’m so excited for what the future has in store for North Minneapolis.

Last week, Governor Walz signed the remainder of the bills we passed during the legislative session. A comprehensive gun violence prevention package could and should have been among those signed into law - but every single House Republican blocked a vote from even taking place on the House Floor.

Gun violence isn’t an issue that is going to go away by burying our heads in the sand. It’s going to take honest conversations and bold action, something that my Republican colleagues are either unwilling or unable to do.

Governor Tim Walz signed multiple bills into law alongside bill authors and advocates at the State Capitol on Wednesday.

With the dust settling on the 2026 Legislative Session, I’m reflecting on what we accomplished and what was left behind. While we did good things this year, I can’t help but think about what else we should have done for Minnesotans at this moment.

Had we just one more DFL vote in the House, or had just ONE Republican joined us in putting the needs of Minnesotans first, we could’ve passed gun violence prevention measures, support for our communities impacted by Operation Metro Surge, and protections for all of Minnesota against future federal government overreach.

Whether they are afraid of President Trump, the gun lobby, or the furthest-right fringes of their party, the cowardice of Republicans this legislative session kept progress from being made. In many of these areas, even some form of compromise was out of the question, and Republican leadership blocked up-or-down votes on proven solutions.

Operation Metro Surge happened, not just in North Minneapolis, but in communities all over the state. Republicans would either like to pretend it didn’t happen at all, or quietly approved of the brutality we saw in our streets.

Our state deserves better, and though Republicans would rather fight for Donald Trump and far-right extremists, I’ll never stop fighting for Minnesotans.

As the 2026 legislative session comes to a close, Minneapolis House members secured several critical wins for a city that has faced a series of difficult headwinds. Major wins include securing stable funding to save the Hennepin County Medical Center and bringing home over $43 million dollars in critical infrastructure investments.

With everything that our city has endured over the last year, we recognized the critical need to deliver for our shared home, stand up for our constituents, and fight for our community. Our communities asked us to pass legislation responding to the epidemic of gun violence and ICE abuses that terrorized our communities. We fought tirelessly to bring home change in a year where a tied House blocked this decisive action. We were able to protect HCMC and invest in critical infrastructure that will go a long way for Minneapolis.

Last night, the Minnesota Legislature passed a package of Capital Investment legislation that will invest over $1.2 billion in regional infrastructure projects across Minnesota.

The legislative package, made up of state bond and General Fund bills, invests in Minnesota’s most pressing infrastructure needs like clean water, safe roads and bridges, updated public buildings, and the resources and facilities necessary for communities to thrive.

Projects located in North Minneapolis includes:

🏀 North Commons Regional Vision - $6 million

🎙KMOJ - $1 million

🏥 Neighborhood Healthsource Clinic - $1.3 million

🏗 Structural Renewal of 36-inch Water Main - $12.36 million

St. Paul, MN- Yesterday, the Roberts Supreme Court issued a 6-3 decision in Callais v. Louisiana dismantling Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), the last standing provision of the historic federal civil rights law that outlawed racial discrimination in voting and redistricting.

Dawn Gillman (R-Hutchinson) presented HF4407, a bill seeking to delay the implementation of the African American Family Preservation and Child Welfare Disproportionality Act statewide by one year, to January 1, 2028.

Lawmakers passed the African American Family Preservation and Child Welfare Disproportionality Act with overwhelming bipartisan support in 2024, under Rep. Esther Agbaje's leadership.
