We join and our sister Leagues across the state of Minnesota to commemorate Juneteenth on June 19. 💚❤️💛
Juneteenth is the oldest nationally recognized celebration of the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. It is a day to reflect on our nation's history, celebrate the resilience and achievement of African Americans, and recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of building a more equitable democracy.
is sponsoring the Humanities Center's Juneteenth celebrations. These community events bring people together to learn, reflect, and honor the history and significance of Juneteenth through storytelling, art, cultural experiences, and meaningful conversations.
We recognize that understanding our shared history strengthens our ability to create a more inclusive future. We encourage our community to take time this Juneteenth to learn, participate in community celebrations, and reflect on the importance of freedom, civic participation, and equal access to our democracy.
