Join us virtually for a Lunch & Learn as we explore the meaning of financial stability and its vital importance relevant to gender and economic justice.

🗓️ Thursday, June 15
🕛 12:00 - 12:45pm central time

This fast-paced, interactive convening will weave facts about the racial and gender-based wealth divide and highlight powerful examples of work being done to dismantle it. We’ll be joined by leadership from Esperanza United, the largest Latin@ organization in the country focused on ending gender-based violence, using a whole-family approach. Esperanza United innovates and delivers tangible financial services and wealth-creating tools to support Latin@s as they empower themselves toward financial stability.

Leaders at C.H. Robinson gathered from around the world last week to participate in a leadership development program. Community service is an integral part of the culture which was demonstrated when they made 50 fleece tie blankets to benefit Women United's partner NdCAD.

Environmental Justice was the topic of Women United's Cocktails & Conversation event in March. Here's how one of our partners is tackling this problem and working to ensure that all members of our community have access to safe and enriching outdoor spaces.

Residents of rural Watertown Township worked with the north Minneapolis nonprofit to resurrect the long-dormant Camp Katharine Parsons.

"It is estimated that it will take 228 years for Black Americans to reach the level of wealth White households enjoy today."

This is why Phyllis Wheatley will launch a *NEW* wealth- and equity-building program specifically for single, heads-of-household women this spring, thanks to generous funding from Greater Twin Cities United Way Women United and The Minneapolis Foundation!

Much more info to come, but for now, check out this work of Prosperity Now, an advocacy agency for financial equality, and stay tuned to learn more about what we're doing to address economic disparity for women in North Minneapolis.

Minneapolis
The Problem: Minneapolis' CoP found significant evidence of wealth disparities ranging from education to homeownership to employment and wealth.

Why the Problem Exists: Lack of safe, affordable banking products and services to give people the chance to build credit or relationships with banks, socially/locally responsible financial institutions, money management conversations early on in African American families and culturally anchored financial institutions in the community. In addition, historical and cultural factors still embedded in policies and systems in the city are root causes of wealth disparities.

CoP Response: Design and implement a robust referral network between participating CoP organizations to increase financial awareness and financial capability among the African American community in North Minneapolis. The three-phase model is a culturally anchored in support services with an emphasis on health, education, employment services and advocacy to support an individuals’ journey to financial well-being (Phase 1 is Employee Referrals; Phase 2 is Client Referrals; Phase 3 is Community Referrals).

We hosted Cocktails & Conversations last week at the North Loop Galley - and what a night 🥰

💐 Linh Buoen of Arden Oak Flowers & Design helped us create stunning floral arrangements that helped us Minnesotans get a taste of spring after a long 🥶 winter.

🎤 Then Carrie Zelin Johnson M.Ed., Greater Twin Cities United Way Program Officer, explained the importance of belonging and personal safety for children in age-appropriate outdoor spaces. This issue is so important that the Children’s Cabinet of the State of Minnesota drafted a Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights in 2022. You can view 👀 the Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights here: https://mn.gov/children-outdoors/

🤤 There was also delicious food and drinks provided. Special shout out to Kawae for providing potstickers, fried rice, kabobs, and many other tasty options.

Women have been critical to the success of United Ways around the world.

When women lead, communities thrive! United Way has a long legacy of women leading the organization. In 1887, Frances Wisebart Jacobs was one of the founding members of a group that would grow into the United Way. That year they raised and shared $21,700 with 10 area health and welfare agencies to benefit many. As we celebrate , we applaud the women of the past and present for their hard work and dedication to their communities and United Way.
