Will for SD 61- Will Do for Senate District #61

Will for SD 61- Will Do for Senate District #61 Election in Senate District 61 Primary September 18 General Election October 18 My reason for running for Senate District #61 is simple.

The voters of Senate District #61 have been served well by Senator Linda Berglin's 40 year tenure in office. The next five weeks in this campaign are a moment for voters to stop and consider who should fill the remainder of the term until next election in November of 2012. Senate District 61 is a culturally diverse community with great resources and many talented inviduals. It is also a community

which will be among the first to feel the impact of the newly enacted budget cuts from the Republican controlled state legislature and the recent cuts from the federal government. As a 20 year resident at the same address I will make my tenure in the office one of helpfulness, openness and transparency to all parts of the community. I will represent Senate District #61 in helping Governor Dayton enact fair and equitable taxation to maintain critical services to all Minnesotans.

Four years ago in 2011 I ran for the Minnesota State Senate in a special election. Although I was not successful in the six week campaign it helped me to appreciate how hard most candidates work to give voters a real choice. This year in SD 62 there is no real choice between either candidates; neither one has bothered to campaign, appear in my community or ask for my vote. I've already voted early and sadly skipped the SD 62 election not casting a ballot for either candidate. One is a perennial token candidate and the other is so flawed and does not deserve my vote. I am now serving on the Minneapolis Advisory Committee on Aging where I feel I am able to make a real contribution at the local level.

Havel was a uniquely gifted individual to the world of theatre, politics and the world. Among his most noted legacies was the concept of a civil society which is so badly lacking in Washington, DC, Jerusalem and ironically in Havel's Prague. Havel was a simple man with a complicated life. He is the reason that I became a "Friend of the Czech Republic" which included lobbying my Minnesota Senators to expand NATO to include the Czech Republic. I imagine the peace pipe that Havel took with him to Moscow was made of pipestone from Minnesota the home of many Czech-Americans. Today, December 3, 2014 a dear Czech friend, Ivan Klima and a former university classmate of Michael Zantovsky's passed away in Minneapolis. Ivan was a simple man with a complicated life. He was a uniquely gifted artist and traveller who left Czechoslovakia with his wife, Ivana and daughter Alice because he simply wanted to see the world. He did not like politics but admired Havel and so I read the David Remnick article to him on Sunday and he raised his hand in a salute saying "Peace, brother". In this season of peace may the simple legacies of Vaclav Havel and Ivan Klima be with us all.

David Remnick on what Havel can teach us: at times of crisis, “as Havel’s example made plain, despair is surrender and unforgivable.”

Here is the White House proposal. Let's get this done and support the President's proposal including a 1 year extension of unemployment compensation benefits set to expire at the end of 2012. Everyone knows someone who has lost a job. Contact your member of Congress and let them know you agree with the White House fiscal proposal including a 1 year extension of long term unemployment benefits which according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget office would add 300,000 jobs to the economy. It's one of the best ways government can stimulate the economy.
