We were excited to co-host recent tours of the North Commons Park construction site with the African American Leadership Forum Twin Cities (AALF) and our partner, the Minneapolis Parks Foundation.

After all, the historic investment underway at North Minneapolis’ flagship park is an apt complement to Northside Forward: AALF’s 10-year vision for growth and investment in North Minneapolis.

With construction just about halfway complete this month, it was a great occasion for Northsiders to come together to see a long-planned vision being realized for a three-gym fieldhouse, lobby and renovated community center, as well as a new waterpark.

Along with AALF staff and guests, images here show:
👀 The lobby with wood beam ceiling supports, some salvaged from the former pool house
👀 Below-grade plumbing and electrical work underway
👀 The near-complete state of the building’s roofing and weather barriers

Once the building is weather-tight, progress on its interiors will ramp up.

Also ramping up: Construction on the new North Commons Water Park! The Park Board extends a special thank you to the State of Minnesota and the legislative delegation for including $6 million for this facility in the Minnesota Legislature's State Infrastructure Bill passed on May 17. Excavation begins this month!

The 22nd leg of SAYPE's monumental land art project "Beyond Walls" is complete on the riverfront lawn at Boom Island Park! Community members gathered with Saype on Friday and Saturday, June 5 and 6, to celebrate the artwork and its message of unity.

Minneapolis is host to the first United States installation of the globally recognized public art initiative that launched in 2019. Since then, Beyond Walls has traveled across four continents, from Fiji to Istanbul to Rio, and in front of landmarks like the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

Beyond Walls is a quiet but radical proposition: that what we share as human beings is greater than what divides us. The work carries no slogan, no flag, no agenda. It is an open invitation to pause, to look, and to remember that we are linked.

Now that the artwork is finished, people are welcome to walk on it. The land art fresco ended up being larger than anticipated – about 310 feet long and 75 feet wide. It was painted with an eco-friendly, biodegradable mixture Saype worked for years to develop.

Saype created this artwork free of charge for the people of Minneapolis. It will fade naturally over the next few weeks, reminding us that the traces we leave on earth are not measured by their duration, but by their meaning.

“I found an incredible humanity in Minneapolis — in the welcome of its people, their stories, their kindness. I'm deeply grateful for that,” said Saype. “And this is the power of art: to bring people together. I hope this work will make people dream — here, and far beyond.”

We're hosting the last two BioBlitz adventures of a two-year series at two new parks this month: June 20 at Lake Hiawatha and June 27 at Lake Nokomis.

What's a BioBlitz, you ask? It's a hands-on way for everyone - not just scientists! - to explore the range of life forms that share Minneapolis parks: Birds, insects, fungi, flowers and so much more!

People of all ages and backgrounds collaborate with local experts to find and identify flora and fauna at a specific time and place, creating a snapshot of biodiversity.

Each daylong BioBlitz is divided into multiple time blocks, so you can sign up for as many or as few as you wish. Get details and sign up at minneapolisparks.org/activities-events/nature-activities/bioblitz-minneapolis-parks/.

Funding for the BioBlitz Minneapolis Parks program was provided by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund (ENRTF), as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR).
