Minnesota Ukrainian community is deeply saddened by the passing of the Minnesota Senator Kari Dziedzic, who represented Senate District 60. It’s a profound loss for our community, our district, and the state of Minnesota. Senator Dziedzic will be fondly remembered for her great support of our Ukrainian community and of Ukraine. For many years, she was an honored guest of the Ukrainian Heritage Festival always warmly greeting members of the community and expressing great interest in Ukrainian culture and traditions. In 2022, at the time of the full scale invasion of Ukraine, she was one of the main sponsors of the bill to divest Russian funds from the Minnesota pension funds.
Rest in Peace, dear friend. We will alway cherish your memory. 🙏 Our most sincere condolences to the Senator’s family.

Didukh is one of the most important symbols of Christmas in Ukraine.
Didukh is also called dido, didochok, snip-rai, koliada, kolidnyk. According to traditions, the didukh is the last sheaf of harvested grain. Oats, rye, wheat, and flax are its main components. This straw amulet is the spirit of our ancestors andthe preservation of traditions and family memory. It is a symbol of a good harvest, peace and harmony in the family, and prosperity in the home. The tradition of placing a didukh in the house in the pokut/corner dates back to very ancient times. In pre-Christian beliefs, the didukh was the embodiment of the god Koliada, a symbol of the memory of our ancestors.

The festive sheaf stayed in the house for a week (sometimes even until Theophany). Its presence broughta festive mood, comfort, and felicity to the family. The people used to say,

«Дідух до хати – біда із хати».

“A didukh in the house means trouble out of the house.”

Nowadays, the sheaf of grain is often replaced by a small “bouquet” of ears of grain, various dried herbs and flowers. However, it's nice that every year more and more Ukrainians are restoring the tradition of putting didukh in their homes for Christmas.

Didukh, hay, and and other Rizdvo traditions have a positive energy boost, giving us a sense of mystery and celebration. It has become a long-standing tradition to bring a 3-meter-tall didukh to Svoboda Avenue in Lviv on Christmas Day. Similarly, these straw amulets are set up in central squares in Kyiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, and other cities.

Bravo Oleksandr Usyk! 🇺🇦Ukrainians all over the world are proud of you! Usyk won his second fight against Tyson Fury by judges’ decision, retaining his three championship belts.
Ukraine’s world heavyweight champ Oleksandr Usyk celebrated tonight’s victory by displaying the saber of Ukrainian Hetman Ivan Mazepa, who fought for Ukrainian independence against Russia 300 years ago.

Usyk’s victory is a symbol of Ukraine’s resilience. He dedicated his victory to his mother and all the mothers of Ukraine.
Symbolically, by retaining his championship belts, Usyk showed that Ukrainians won’t give up what’s theirs. 🇺🇦Ukraine will prevail!
