Yesterday, June 11, at approximately 10:34 a.m., MVFD responded to a tragic plane crash on Bennett Schoolhouse Road. Our thoughts are with the pilot, his family, and the affected homeowners.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the nearly 70 emergency personnel who responded in 23 emergency apparatus. This represented the largest coordinated emergency response in our jurisdiction since the propane truck fire in the early 1990s.

Emergency personnel from the Columbus Fire Department, Jefferson Township Fire & Rescue, Minford EMS, Porter Township Fire Department, Rubyville Volunteer Fire Department, South Webster-Bloom Township Fire Department, Stockdale Fire Department, Valley Township Fire Department, and Vernon Township Fire Rescue responded to this incident.

We received additional support from the Scioto County Sheriff's Office, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Scioto County Coroner, the Scioto County Emergency Management Agency, the Salvation Army Portsmouth Corps, the Federal Aviation Administration, and National Transportation Safety Board.

We thank all of these responders for their professionalism and efforts.
Special thanks to Minford IGA and Giovanni’s of Minford for providing sandwiches, pizzas, and cold drinks to our responders.

Firefighter Robert T. Kilduff Jr., 53 - Rescue 2
Boston Fire Department. Boston, MA
Firefighter Kilduff was killed while battling a three-alarm fire in Dorchester at a home on Treadway Road. Firefighters responded to a call reporting a fire around 8 p.m. and encountered heavy flames on all three floors extending into the attic. During efforts to extinguish the fire, Firefighter Kilduff fell from a third floor rear porch and sustained critical injuries. Despite the best efforts of firefighters, EMS personnel, and crews on scene, he succumbed to his injuries. Firefighter Kilduff, a 24-year veteran of the department, and U.S. Marine Corp veteran. He was also a third generation firefighter, his grandfather Vincent Kilduff died in a LODD in 1947 and his father died from occupational cancer in 2008.

For throwback Thursday, we go back to this day in 1968. It’s the anniversary of the F5 tornado that devastated Wheelersburg to near Gallipolis, Ohio. Nine people died in Ohio that day from this tornado outbreak!

The northbound lanes of State Route 823 are closed between the airport exit at Shumway Hollow Road and the Lucasville-Minford exit due to an accident involving a large dump truck and several automobiles. The roadway will be closed for a few hours. Please avoid the area and find an alternative route.
