As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day weekend, it is important that we pause to remember the true meaning behind the holiday.
Memorial Day traces its origins to the years following the Civil War. Originally known as “Decoration Day,” it began as a time for communities to honor fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers. The first widely recognized observance took place on May 30, 1868. In 1971, Congress officially designated Memorial Day as a federal holiday to be observed on the last Monday of May.
Today, Memorial Day weekend is often associated with the unofficial beginning of summer — family gatherings, travel, cookouts, and time spent together. While we enjoy these traditions and the freedoms we are blessed with, we should never lose sight of the sacrifices that made those freedoms possible.
Since the founding of our nation in 1775, approximately 1.3 million members of the United States military have died while serving our country. Their courage and sacrifice secured the liberties we enjoy every day.
Korean War veteran and Purple Heart recipient Howard William Osterkamp is credited with the powerful phrase:
“All gave some, some gave all.”
Later popularized by Billy Ray Cyrus, those words remain a moving reminder of the cost of freedom and the debt of gratitude we owe to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
On behalf of our Rotary Club, we wish everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend. As we celebrate with loved ones, let us also take a moment to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation.
