Today, we remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country, and we keep their families and loved ones in our thoughts. Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy every day. We are forever grateful for the courage and selflessness of those who never made it home. To all the families carrying the memory of a fallen hero — we thank you, we honor you, and we will never forget.

Yesterday morning, Legislator Mulé and I had the pleasure of joining Superintendent Anthony Mignella and Interim High School Principal Dr. Michelle Gallo at Baldwin High School to celebrate an exceptional group of students whose achievements in academics, music, and athletics truly deserve recognition. We were also proud to honor Boys Varsity Basketball Head Coach Darius Burton for his outstanding leadership and remarkable success in building a first-class basketball program. It is always an honor to recognize the extraordinary talent and dedication found throughout the First Legislative District!

Lots of fun in District 1 last week. There were many events throughout the district, starting Friday night with the Roosevelt Chamber of Commerce Gala which honored residents for their outstanding contributions to the betterment of the community. Saturday morning Legislator Mulé and I started off bright and early with the second annual Baldwin Community Bike Rodeo and Parade at Baldwin Park. Next we attended The Town of Hempstead Sanitation District 2 "Operation Shed-The-Meds, Document Shredding & E Cycle Drop Off" event for residents. Afterwards Legislator Olena Nicks, Assemblywoman Judy Griffin and me attended the annual camporee hosted by Theodore Roosevelt Council of Scouting America at Hempstead Lake State Park. Fortunately, this year the scouts were treated to great weather throughout the weekend. It was also clean up time at Smith Pond Park, sponsored by State Senator Siela Bynoe, Assemblywoman Judy Griffin, RVC Mayor Francis X. Murray and me. Many thanks to all the volunteers who came out and did such a great job cleaning up. Last but not least, it was a pleasure to attend the Rockville Centre Fire Department installation dinner. Congratulations to all the members of the Fire Department. Their service and dedication are greatly appreciated. Many thanks to their families as well!

A reminder to all our neighbors in District 1: While LIRR passenger service is completely suspended due to the ongoing strike, the tracks and third rails remain live and electrified. Non-passenger work trains are still running. Please stay off the tracks entirely for your safety.

It was a pleasure to attend the 2026 Congressional Art Competition for NY-04 at Hofstra University sponsored by Congresswoman Laura Gillen. I was amazed by the creativity of the submissions from the students of the 4th Congressional District. Congratulations to all the students receiving well deserved recognition for their artwork. Special congratulations to the many students from LD1 and the overall winner from Rockville Centre, Gabriela Guizzo.
