In the last couple of days, we stood guard and paid our final respects for one of our own, Honorary Chief Stephen Stolarik Sr. Steve joined the Mineola Fire Department family back in 1972 when he was 40 years old.
Recognizing the importance of volunteer service, he chose to make the time to give back to his community. Service was a hallmark in Steve’s life. He served in the United States Marine Corps for over 30 years and 15 years in the Fleet Reserve. Steve ended his Military career as a Master Sergeant with over 45 years of service. Undoubtedly, it was this dedication to duty, honor and country which would bring Steve to serve his local community.
The members of Truck Company Two were quick to recognize the value of Steve’s military background. He was elected to the position of Sergeant at Arms in 1972 and held this position till the very last day. His historic reign coupled with his Marine Corps rank has earned him the name “Sarge” throughout the department.
Steve received many awards in the fire service such as Truck Company No.2 Firefighter of the Year in 1981 and 2000, Department Firefighter of the Year in 1986 and Town of Hempstead Firematic Award in 2005 to name a few. He was also named Honorary Captain at the Truck Company's Centennial Dinner (2007) and in 2009 he recieved the title of Honorary Chief of the Department.
"Sarge can Fix it" a phrase that was often heard in our firehouse. He was legendary for his telephone and radio installations. Steve was often found carrying his signature Tool kit which includes many instruments he had fabricated himself. His knowledge of electrical wiring and diligent work ethic saved the department countless dollars in repairs.
At 92 years of age, Steve continued to gear up and respond to alarms at all hours of the day and night. The Mineola Fire Department, Truck Company No.2, United States Marine Corp., and the residents of the Village of Mineola lost a brother, loved one, friend and a true leader. We all have a “Sarge story” and as we stood shoulder to shoulder to pay him our final respects shoulder to shoulder, we felt him looking down on us thanking us.
Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.
