Early this morning at 5:29 a.m., Clackamas Fire responded to a residential fire on SE 427th Ave in Sandy after a neighbor reported smoke and fire coming from the home. Engine 371 and Rescue 371 arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from an attached garage, with fire extending into the home. Firefighters initiated an aggressive fire attack to protect exposures while simultaneously conducting searches of the home and basement because the whereabouts of the occupants were initially unknown. All residents were later confirmed to have safely exited the structure. Firefighters worked to locate and extinguish fire that had extended through attic and ceiling spaces, requiring crews to pull ceiling and access concealed areas throughout the home. Crews remained on scene extinguishing hot spots and conducting overhaul to ensure the fire was fully out.

An investigator determined the fire was caused by a failure in the battery charging system of a lithium-ion battery.

Responding units included: BC301, BC302, BR312, BR374, E314, E318, E371, HR305, R371, S319, WT308, WT312, WT371, WT374, FM307, and RH302, along with AMR and PGE.

Safety Message

Clackamas Fire reminds the public to:
• Follow manufacturer recommendations when charging lithium-ion batteries
• Use approved charging equipment designed for the specific battery
• Avoid leaving batteries charging unattended
• Keep batteries and charging equipment away from combustible materials
• Regularly inspect batteries and chargers for signs of damage, overheating, or wear
• Stop using batteries or chargers that become excessively hot, swollen, or damaged

On June 2nd, Clackamas Fire provided mutual aid to Molalla Fire District for a second alarm structure fire. Battalion Chief 303, Engine 313, Engine 310, Truck 316, and Water Tender 310 responded to assist with fire attack, water supply, and vertical ventilation. Here’s body cam footage of Truck 316 venting on the north side of the fire building to improve visibility for search crews inside the structure.

More on the incident from Molalla Fire District:

At approximately 2:00 p.m., Molalla Fire District responded to multiple reports of a structure fire just outside the city of Molalla. The first arriving Chief Officer found 2 structures heavily involved in fire, with bystanders reporting that a person might still be inside.

Due to the possibility of an entrapped victim, the incident was immediately upgraded to a second alarm. The second alarm brought additional resources from Aurora Fire District, Canby Fire District, Clackamas Fire District, Colton Fire District, Mt. Angel Fire District, and Silverton Fire District. Firefighters conducted a rapid search of the barn and confirmed that all occupants were accounted for. During the search, crews unfortunately found several animals that did not survive the fire. Firefighters were however able to rescue two dogs and one cat from one of the structures. Fire personnel utilized specialized pet rescue oxygen masks, carried on fire apparatus to provide immediate treatment. The animals were safely reunited with their owner. One person was displaced due to the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

May kept us moving! 🐝

From emergency calls and training drills to community events and public education, our crews stayed busy serving and protecting our community. Here’s a look at what went on behind the scenes of a busy month of service, teamwork, and dedication. 🚒

(1) Just before 1:40 pm on 5/19, our Water Rescue Team was dispatched to Aurora to respond to a couple who were unable to free their boat from a patch of logs due to a strong current. During the response, one of the victims began to experience a medical event. Together with TVF&R, Aurora Fire and Lake Oswego Fire, the Water Rescue Consortium were able to rescue the couple from their boat, where TVF&R then treated and transported the patient. Responding units: E915, CCRWTEAM, AMRDA, C901, WR319, R054, E059, WR059, BC303, AMRDC, DR214, WR020, C06, WR212

(2) Our newest recruits graduated from the fire academy just last week, but not before some intense hose training!

(3) I spy: Crew 30 (our Wildland crew) in full prep mode, gearing up for summer.

(4) Group shot! All smiles from our Tech Rescue team during a training on (or off?) the Abernathy Bridge.

(5) T316 and HR305 spent a bluebird day checking hoses off a 105-foot ladder and enjoying the view of Mt. Hood!

(6) It’s always a treat to spend the day tomorrow’s firefighters! A big thanks to North Clackamas School District for letting us spend the day with some of their kindergarteners.

(7) A group shot of just a few members of the multi-jurisdictional team who responded to a trapped climber on Mt. Hood, pinned under a 16k-pound boulder. Responding units from Clackamas Fire: S319, HR305, T316, BC301

Like many in our community, we are deeply saddened by yesterday’s tragedy in Sandy. Our thoughts remain with the recovering Sandy Police officer, the victims and their families, the Sandy community, and all of the responders who faced extraordinary circumstances during this heartbreaking incident. We continue to stand with the Sandy Police Department and offer our full support as they navigate the difficult days ahead.

Firefighters, paramedics, and rescue personnel worked alongside law enforcement and emergency responders during this dynamic and dangerous incident to provide medical care and support operational needs. We are relieved that the injured Sandy Police officer is recovering, a testament to the swift actions of fellow first responders and medical professionals.

Our hearts remain with everyone affected during this incredibly difficult time.
