Did you know that extreme heat contributes to at least 1,500 deaths in the United States each year?

Hot weather can be especially dangerous for young children, older adults, and individuals with certain health conditions. As temperatures rise, it's important to stay hydrated and spend time in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. If you need a place to cool off, several public locations throughout the Milwaukee area are available as Cooling Sites. These sites provide a safe, air-conditioned environment to help residents stay healthy during periods of extreme heat.

Homelessness in the U.S. has always been shaped by bigger economic and social shifts. It grew with industrialization in the 1800s, peaked during the Great Depression, declined after WWII, then rose again in the 1970s–80s due to job loss, rising housing costs, and gaps in support systems. The Great Recession in 2008 increased family homelessness, while COVID-19 relief briefly reduced it. Today, homelessness is at record highs. Understanding the past helps us build better solutions.

MCHH Myth Buster Series

MYTH: Homelessness is only a "big city" problem.

FACT: Homelessness in suburban and rural communities is often called “invisible,” but the number of people affected continues to grow. Rising housing costs, limited affordable housing, unstable employment, and low wages are leaving more individuals and families without stable places to live. Because populations are more spread out and there are fewer shelters and support services than in cities, homelessness in these areas can be harder to recognize. Many people also face barriers such as limited transportation, safety concerns, and lack of access to healthcare and other essential resources.

When we replace myths with facts, we move closer to real solutions.

The 2026 Milwaukee Point-In-Time (PIT) Count was conducted on January 28. The PIT Count is an annual effort to count the number of people experiencing homelessness in a community on a single night in January. People survey both sheltered (in emergency shelters, transitional housing, etc.) and unsheltered (on streets or in other places not meant for human habitation) individuals. The PIT Count is more than just data collection. The information gathered helps guide federal Continuum of Care (CoC) funding, informs local planning efforts, and highlights trends and gaps in services across the community. While the count reflects only one night, it plays an important role in shaping strategies and strengthening support for those experiencing homelessness in Milwaukee. Below are a few key findings from the 2026 Milwaukee PIT Count.

Memorial Day is a time to honor the brave men and women who lost their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. As we remember their sacrifice, it’s also important to reflect on the challenges many veterans continue to face after returning home.

Some veterans experience significant barriers that can lead to housing instability. Factors such as post-traumatic stress, the difficulty of transitioning from military to civilian life, limited social support, substance use, and survivor’s guilt can all contribute to these challenges. Without adequate resources and support, these issues can make it harder to maintain stable housing and overall well-being.

This day of remembrance is not only about honoring those we’ve lost, but also about supporting those who are still here. By raising awareness and advocating for meaningful solutions, we can help ensure that all veterans have access to stable housing, healthcare, and the support services they deserve.

If you are a Veteran who is homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness, call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 877-424-3838 for assistance.
