A huge thank you to the incredible Baird employees who volunteered during Baird Gives Back week.

Together, volunteers helped vision screen 472 students and referred 164 students for further eye care — an impact that will truly make a difference in the lives of Wisconsin children.

Vision screenings like these would not be possible without dedicated volunteers who give their time to help students access this critical first step toward healthy vision and learning success.

Wisconsin is one of only nine states that does not require school vision screenings, which means many children may never receive a screening without the support of schools and community volunteers like the Baird team.

At just 25 years old, Connie lost sight in one eye due to complications from Type 1 diabetes.

For more than 55 years since, protecting the vision in her remaining eye has been essential. But living on widow’s benefits made affording eye care and glasses nearly impossible.

Thanks to support from compassionate partners and donors, Connie received a comprehensive eye exam and glasses through the National Vision Cares program — helping her protect the sight she has left. 💙

We are excited to share that our President & CEO, Tami Garcia, recently joined Real Milwaukee to talk about the mission of Prevent Blindness Wisconsin and the life-changing impact of vision health.

During the segment, Tami shared her own personal journey with vision health, along with her son’s story, highlighting just how important early detection and access to vision care can be for children and families. She also spoke about the incredible work PBW staff, volunteers, and vision screening partners carry out every single day across Wisconsin to help prevent blindness and preserve sight.

Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) can cause severe vision loss or even blindness. When an eye doctor suspects an IRD, they will refer the patient to an ophthalmologist for a detailed eye examination.
