Israel Ramón took the oath of office for his second term as the Milwaukee County Register of Deeds. He has appointed Steven Kroll as Chief Deputy Register of Deeds, and Daniel Orlowski (Real Estate Manager) and Teresa Sarnowski (Finance and Vital Records Manager) as Deputy Registers of Deeds. Combined, they have over eight-five years of ROD and legal experience.

The priorities for the next four years include strict adherence to the recording and vital records statutes, maintaining fiscal responsibility and accountability, prioritizing excellence in customer service, increasing land records technology and scanning and indexing five million historical birth, death and marriage records from the 1800’s to the 1990’s.

On March 27th Governor Tony Evers signed bipartisan legislation intended to protect members of Wisconsin’s judiciary. Of particular importance to Register of Deeds Offices is the shielding of personal information of judges and their immediate family members. Today I attended the local Property Records Industry Association (PRIA) meeting along with several Registers from throughout our state (including the Racine County ROD - Karie Pope and Kenosha County ROD - JoEllyn Storz) discussing our obligations under the new law which goes into effect in January 2025. Please call our office for further information about this law.

On March 22nd, 2024 Governor Tony Evers signed a bipartisan bill into law prohibiting the recording of racially restrictive (discriminatory) covenants in deeds. Registers of Deeds can reject deeds with these covenants. Moreover, the law allows Wisconsin residents who become aware of racially restrictive covenants in their deeds to record a discharge and release form which releases the discriminatory language in their deed. I was proud to work with the WI Realtors Association and the legislative committee of the WI Registers of Deeds Association to provide input into the language of the bill. This was a historic day in our state to address discriminatory language in real property records. Please call the Register of Deeds Office at 414-278-4001 with any questions.
