✨ Program Highlight: Emergency Shelter ✨

Today, we’re sharing a closer look at our Emergency Shelter program and why it matters now more than ever. 💛

2025 Milwaukee Point-In-Time (PIT) Count data shows a growing need in our community. 986 individuals were identified as experiencing homelessness, with 78% staying in Emergency Shelters. That’s a 10% increase in overall homelessness and an 18% rise in shelter use compared to last year.

Behind these numbers are real people: women and families seeking safety, stability, and a chance to move forward.

🏠 In 2025, thanks to your support, we were able to provide:
- 15,232 nights of safe shelter to women and adults & children in families
- Empowering services for 195 unaccompanied women and 50 families with children
- Support that helped 84 women and 43 families with children move into safe, permanent homes

Emergency shelters are more than a place to stay, they are a starting point for healing, dignity, and hope. We are deeply grateful to our community for making this work possible. 💫 But as the need continues to grow, so does the urgency.

🚨 You can help. Your support ensures that women and families have a safe place to land and the resources to build a brighter future.

We’re celebrating a family from our Friendship House program who recently moved into safe, stable housing—a milestone shaped by their courage and determination. 💛

When this mother and daughter arrived at Friendship House, they had been navigating months of uncertainty. With a safe place to land, supportive staff walking alongside them, and their own incredible resilience, they began to heal and regain their footing. 🌿

Over time, the mother secured steady employment, saved for housing, and took each step toward stability with intention and hope. Today, they’re settling into their new home—a space where they can rest, grow, and dream. 🏠✨

Their journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when women and families are met with dignity, compassion, and the right support.

🧠 Mental Health Awareness Month continues throughout May. 💚

💬 Today we wanted to share some meaningful insights from Nikki, our Clinical Services Coordinator and a lead facilitator on our Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) Committee. Here’s what Nikki had to say about TIC and the mental health services she helps provide for our clients:

“TIC recognizes that many people experiencing homelessness have survived significant trauma, and that healing begins when shelters create environments grounded in safety, trust, empowerment, and dignity. By reducing re-traumatization and fostering supportive relationships, trauma-informed practices can improve mental health outcomes and increase long-term stability for shelter residents.

I run a mental health and trauma focused recovery group called ‘A Healing Journey.’ It helps support mental health and trauma recovery by creating a safe and consistent space where individuals can process experiences, build coping skills, and connect with others who understand similar struggles.”

The impact of this group Nikki runs has been significant, with clients reporting that it’s helped reduce stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, while also helping them develop coping skills, increased self-esteem, and a sense of hope and control. 💚

This is just a small look into the types of services Cathedral Center provides to help clients maintain a positive well-being. Thank you to Nikki, and all our staff, for creating spaces that allow for healing and connection. 👏💗

MCHH Myth Buster Series

MYTH: Homeless people are dangerous

FACT: People experiencing homelessness are more likely to be victims of crime than to commit crimes themselves. The instability and exposure that come with homelessness greatly increases the risk of victimization. Research shows that about half of unhoused individuals report having experienced violence, with higher risks among older adults, women, and those who have been homeless for extended periods. Access to stable housing plays a critical role in improving personal safety and reducing these risks.
