This weekend, June 6-7, is Free Fishing 🎣 at state parks for Wisconsinites!! Thank you, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources 💙

Free Fishing Weekend is June 6-7!

Wisconsin residents and out-of-state visitors can fish state waters without buying a fishing license, trout stamp or salmon stamp. However, please know all other fishing regulations, including bag limits, size limits and species restrictions, remain in effect.

There will be fishing clinics providing simple, hands-on instruction such as casting, knot tying, fish identification and basic fishing techniques for those new to this sport. Wisconsin DNR Tackle Loaner Sites located statewide has rods, reels and tackle for participants needing equipment.

Recycling facilities, landfills, garbage trucks and other parts of the waste and recycling industry in Wisconsin are experiencing frequent and sometimes devastating fires.

While it can be hard to determine the cause of each fire, studies have shown rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are often to blame. If damaged by equipment in waste trucks or facilities, these batteries can spark or produce enough heat to ignite surrounding materials. This photo shows the aftermath of recyclables catching fire in a city of Madison recycling truck. These fires put workers and firefighters at risk, in addition to causing millions of dollars in damage.

You can help prevent fires like these:
– Never put batteries or electronics in your recycling bin or cart.
– Take rechargeable batteries to a recycling drop-off site, like a hardware store or local recycling center.
– Recycle your electronics through E-Cycle Wisconsin. Many sites accept electronics like laptops and cellphones for free.

Rain is on the way! 🌧️💧After a dry stretch, showers and thunderstorms are expected in the Milwaukee area early Friday through Saturday.

Before the rain arrives, empty your rain barrel to make room for incoming rainfall. Rain barrels help reduce stormwater runoff, ease pressure on the sewer system, and protect local waterways.

Help protect our waterways by spreading the word and sharing this post with friends and neighbors. 💙

What if reducing flooding started with protecting the upstream land? 🌱💧

By preserving land with water-absorbing soils, Greenseams® stores and naturally drains billions of gallons of water into the ground — reducing flooding, improving water quality, and protecting the hundreds of millions of dollars invested in MMSD’s flood management infrastructure.
Here’s the impact so far:
🌳 6,105 acres of land permanently preserved
🏡 167 properties protected
🌲 118,500+ trees planted
🌿 1,000+ acres restored
💰 Over $12 million in leveraged funds
💧 3.3+ billion gallons of water stored
Every acre protected helps keep our rivers cleaner and communities safer.

"I love living by the lake! My husband and I decided to plant a beautiful rain garden in front of our house last year. We even purchased most of the plants through the MMSD plant sale, they did so well, we had to make the plot bigger. Turns out, not only is it a rain garden, but also a pollinator haven. I included a pic of what it looks like now, before bloom (and before I add more plants from the 2026 MMSD sale). I can’t wait to see how beautiful it becomes this year!" Dawn - Milwaukee, WI

Over two million gallons. That's how much stormwater Buchel Park Wetlands will manage during a single rain event!

This upcoming Fresh Coast Green Communities project — in partnership with Greenprint Partners — will bring a constructed wetland to Milwaukee that mimics the absorbing and filtering functions of natural wetlands, reducing flooding risk in nearby neighborhoods and creating green space for the community. Educational signage throughout the site will help visitors understand how green infrastructure keeps Milwaukee's waterways healthy.
