The Milwaukee Arts Board (MAB) was created to enhance the development, cultural diversity, accessibility and enjoyment of the arts for Milwaukee's citizens. The City of Milwaukee Arts Board (MAB) has announced the 2026 Mildred L. Harpole Artists of the Year and 2026 Friends of the Arts award recipients. These honorees recognize and celebrate excellence and exceptional service in Milwaukee’s arts community.

Artists David Najib Kasir and Ojumire Dounfola Charleston were named the 2026 Artists of the Year. Ferne Yangyeitie Caulker and Karl Kopp were named the 2026 Friends of the Arts.

All award recipients will be honored on June 9, 2026, at 4:30 p.m. in the City Hall Rotunda. Local arts organizations receiving MAB-sustaining grants will also be recognized. RSVP to join us for the reception at: bit.ly/MAB2026awards

Be the next PAIR! The City of Milwaukee Arts Board seeks our next Public Artist in Residence. Apply by March 16 at 11 am.

PAIR originated as an initiative of the Milwaukee Arts Board’s (MAB) Public Art Subcommittee (PAS) with the first residency occurring between 2022-2024. PAIR presents an opportunity for collaboration, embedding an artist in City departments to strategize, propose, and implement public art as creative solutions to complex civic challenges.

The Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD) has been selected as the host department. An artist and a PAIR liaison will be working with MFD and Milwaukee residents to address safe housing, a foundational issue impacting all Milwaukeeans and all City departments. The residency also aligns with Mayor Cavalier Johnson’s designation of 2026 as the .

The Milwaukee Arts Board is accepting nominations from the public for the Mildred L. Harpole Artists of the Year and Friends of the Arts awards! Recipients of these awards represent excellence and exceptional service in Milwaukee’s arts community.

Two Artists of the Year recipients each receive a $1,500 cash award. Nominations must be submitted online by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

The City of Milwaukee is urging residents to take precautions due to extreme cold temperatures forecasted through the weekend. All Milwaukee Public Library locations will be OPEN this Friday, January 23rd, and Saturday, January 24th, as warming sites. Wind chills as low as 40 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Dress in layers, including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside. Carvd N Stone has announced the fourth annual CNS Loren Martin Hintz Travel Writing Scholarship. Carvd N Stone will award $1,000 to a Milwaukee writer based on the 2025 essay theme: “In what ways has traveling away from your hometown and exploring new places changed you?”.

Applications opened on September 8, 2025, at 9 a.m. CST and will close on November 3, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. CST. You do not need to be a student to apply.

This scholarship is an annual tribute to the award-winning career of Loren Martin Hintz, who traveled around the world capturing unique people and moments in words and photographs.
