These transitions happen five times each year so that we can bring you fresh themed exhibits. Naturally, the Desert and Tropical Domes remain open, so that you can experience both, with their lush plant life--some specimens date to the mid 1960s--and plenty of new blooms. Ground was broken in 1959, and the domes opened in phases: the Show House (Show Dome) was the first to debut, in 1964; the Tropical House (Tropical Dome) opened in 1966; and the Arid House (Desert Dome) first welcomed visitors in 1967. Glass begets glass in classic design ...The original Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory (1899-1955) was inspired by London's Crystal Palace. The Domes (opened 1964) were inspired by the Geodesic Dome designs of Buckminster Fuller. While Fuller's domes were spherical, Milwaukee's Domes are in fact conoidal--and may be the only conoidal glass structures in existence. Final 2 days! Our annual Spring Show ends tomorrow, Monday. BEES! enlightens as it entertains, using whimsical metal sculptures of bees and informative signs to tell the story of these endangered pollinators. Like all Show Dome exhibits, this is a florally-focused show, with hydrangeas, sweet pea, and petunias in the bright and fragrant mix.
We're open Memorial Day from 9am to 4pm, with last admission at 3:00. Be with us and experience the Domes at their radiant best (don't miss the fresh blooms in Tropical and Desert, including the Beaked yucca - see photo). Our Summer Show opens June 6. mitchellparkdomes.com

Saturday only! As our annual Spring Show winds down--it closes Monday--join us for a live bee experience in the lobby from 10am to 3pm. Milwaukee's BeeVangelists, a group dedicated to the preservation of the essential pollinators, displays their observation hive alongside some very detailed bee models. Also, local purveyors, HoneyBee Sage offers tea, honey, and loose-leaf tea bags for sale during those hours.
BEES! is the Spring Show. Learn more about protecting bees in the natural environment in this edutaining floral show. Metal bee sculptures are set amid a fragrant bed of classic spring flowers, with hydrangeas in the forefront.
