Ready to make a real, lasting impact on local wildlife? 🦋🌱

We have 1,000 prairie plants that need a home in the ground this summer, and we can’t do it without you!

Join us tomorrow June 6 at Havenwoods State Forest for a hands-on volunteer day. We’re expanding the Naturalist’s Backyard and continuing our Rain Garden Reconstruction projects. Come ready to dig some holes, get a little dirty, and leave a legacy that supports our local ecosystem and educational programs for years to come!

📅 Event Details
When: Saturday, June 6
Session 1: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Session 2: 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Where: Havenwoods State Forest (Meet at the Nature Center)

Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, sunscreen/insect repellant and dress for the weather. If you have a pair of work gloves to use, great! If not, we’ll have some to borrow for the day, as well as knee pads, shovels, and other tools. Please bring your own water bottle.

Whether you can stay for one session or both, every single plant counts. Grab a friend, family member, or neighbor and let's grow together!

Please spread the word! The Friends of Havenwoods State Forest is seeking an additional volunteer to assist with promoting events and news about the forest on our Facebook and Instagram accounts. This is done through creation of engaging flyers or images using Canva and posting on Facebook and Instagram.

We anticipate the time commitment to be approximately 4-6 hours per month, creating posts related to events, history, and educational content about the wide variety of plants and animals that call Havenwoods home.

We are looking for someone who feels at ease with creating Facebook and Instagram posts; who has experience with Canva or ability to learn new software to create flyers; who has a collaborative and positive mindset, along with a love for nature.

We ask that you commit for a year, if possible, and due to our limited resources, the volunteer will need to utilize their own personal phone or computer.

Interested in the coordinator position? Please contact Judy Dollhausen, Friends of Havenwoods President, [email protected].

Did you know that North America has lost over 3 billion birds since the 1970s? The primary reason is habitat loss. Havenwoods State Forest is a great example of habitat restoration. Since 1980, tremendous progress has been made in restoring short-grass prairie, wetlands, and forested areas across the 237acres. All this habitat work benefits migrating and resident birds. Just over two hundred bird species have been documented at Havenwoods, including grassland birds such as Henslow's Sparrows, Eastern Meadowlarks, and Boblinks.

The Friends of Havenwoods Thrashers Birdathon team is participating in the Great Wisconsin Birdathon to help raise funds for our birds and Wisconsin's birds! On June 13, our team will try to find as many birds at Havenwoods as we can! In addition to documenting species, we will note nesting birds on the property. Successful nests are key to reversing bird population decline.

Money raised by the Thrashers will be split between the Wisconsin Bird Protection Fund and Friends of Havenwoods. We invite you to join by birding with us on June 13 and/or donating to the team. Any donation, no matter how small, is appreciated. Thank you!
