Volunteer Opportunities
ASIS&T conferences are made possible through the efforts of people who care about promoting usability. Your contribution can help make the 2014 IA Summit the leading forum for the exchange of ideas among information practitioners.
The 2014 IA Summit volunteers must be available throughout the entire conference, March 28-30, 2013 and contribute a minimum of 12-15 hours of service during that time. The success of past volunteer efforts was based on communication, so in addition, attendance is mandatory at morning volunteer meetings during the conference.
What do Conference Volunteers do?
2014 IA Summit volunteers perform a wide variety of duties including:
· Assist in ASIS&T Headquarters (when needed)
· Assist session speakers or moderators (non technical)
· Assist with podcasting of sessions
· Provide information and directions between conference sessions
· Download speaker presentation on memory stick
Why would I want to be a Conference Volunteer?
· You will gain exposure to prospective employers and plenty of opportunity for networking
· Your registration fee will be waved.
How many Conference Volunteers are needed?
For the 2014 IA Summit, we will need at least 12 volunteers. Slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to ASIS&T full-time students. If the available volunteer opportunities have been filled, your name will be placed on the waitlist.
Do I qualify as a Conference Volunteer?
The volunteer experience is intended to provide access to the conference for people who might not otherwise be able to attend. Therefore, volunteers are selected based on the following criteria (in order of acceptance):
· ASIS&T Member in good standing
· Full-time college or graduate students, including Winter 2013 graduates
· Part-time students enrolled in a degree or certificate program
How much does it cost to be a Conference Volunteer?
This scholarship is available to ASIS&T student members at no cost to them. To help ASIS&T student members who might not otherwise be able to participate in ASIS&T meetings, we provide an opportunity to attend the sessions and network with other members in exchange for assisting us in running the meeting.
Does the ASIS&T cover travel and lodging for Conference Volunteers?
Unfortunately ASIS&T cannot provide travel or lodging assistance to conference volunteers. We encourage you to share rooms at the conference hotel and we will help you find a roommate, if needed.
If I volunteer, will I still be able to attend my preferred sessions?
If there is a workshop that you simply have to attend, we suggest that you register for the summit as an attendee. This will free you up to concentrate completely on the material, without being distracted by volunteer duties. While we can't guarantee that you will be assigned to work a particular session, we do try to make some accommodations for volunteer preferences during the scheduling process.
***Pre-conference workshops: Unfortunately, student volunteers are not able to attend pre-con workshops for free.***
What are the physical and environmental requirements of volunteering?
While we strive to make the volunteering experience accessible for everyone, applicants should be aware that the volunteer tasks may include:
· standing for long periods of time (as when collecting meal tickets, or directing traffic between sessions)
· experiencing potentially long days (we strive to balance the schedule, but some days can be long)
