Avoid using substances alone! Having another person present can reduce the risk of a fatal overdose by ensuring someone is available to respond, administer Narcan, or call for emergency help.

Harm reduction focuses on practical steps people can take to stay safer. If you are using substances, having someone with you is one way to help make sure there is a person available to respond if something goes wrong.
If you are going to use, consider making a safety plan:

Use with a partner: Take turns so one person remains alert and able to respond.

Stagger use: If everyone uses at the same time, no one may be able to help in an emergency.

Use a remote safety line: If no one can be with you in person, you can call the Wisconsin Addiction Recovery Helpline or use a remote spotting service such as Never Use Alone. A trained operator can stay on the phone and contact emergency services if you stop responding.

You can pick up free Narcan kits and safety supplies to share with your circle at UMOS Health Promotions, Vivent Health, or from any Milwaukee County harm reduction vending machine. Ours is located at 1034 N. Vel R. Phillips, Milwaukee, WI 53203. You can find the one closest to you here > http://bit.ly/4exsZpJ

The Milwaukee Turners firmly oppose Flock and any automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology. Milwaukee residents should not be subjected to constant surveillance.

Our Executive Director, Emilio De Torre, spoke at the Fire and Police Commission last month in opposition to Flock as more and more municipalities in Wisconsin say NO to ALPRs.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a fitting time to talk about how closely emotional well-being and substance use overlap. Progress is never a straight line and mental health challenges can intertwine with substance use as people navigate stress, trauma, or pain.
While individual habits will vary, reducing harm and being smart about usage is helpful. Instead of asking for perfection, we can offer real support by meeting people exactly where they are
Choosing to use a fentanyl test strip, carry Narcan, or adopt safer usage habits is a valid, responsible way to protect your well-being. Every step toward safety is a milestone worth recognizing, and when we focus on that instead of impossible standards, we empower people to look out for themselves and one another.

You don’t have to navigate your journey alone. Call the Su***de Crisis Helpline 988, or call 211 or connect online to https://www.impactinc.org/ for confidential 24/7 support to connect you to local care and resources that meet your needs.

You can also find free Narcan, fentanyl testing strips, or gunlocks at our FREE Harm Reduction Vending Machine at 1034 N. Vel R. Phillips, Milwaukee, WI 53203.

“There are no guardrails that can guarantee our safety, nor meaningful arguments for such invasive, large scale surveillance that feeds into an already expansive web of digital stalking,” said Emilio De Torre, the executive director of the Milwaukee Turners, a social justice organization.
