Always flush hard enough to create turbulence in the pipe (+2.5 feet per second). The turbulence scrubs the walls of the pipe. This pipe passed safe samples - but couldn’t be flushed with turbulence through the stand pipes. I’m glad we “blasted” these silts & fines out of the new pipe!

As the weather gets warmer, utilities with Treated Lake Michigan water begin flushing programs to maintain safe water quality for our customers. Ironically, some customers view it as “wasting water”, not the necessary maintenance of the water distribution system it actually represents.

Valve repair. Carbon steel bolts from the 80’s & 90’s fail causing the valve bonnet to pop. Several of our communities are experiencing this.

Interesting - we had a stainless steel repair sleeve fail on a repair that was done roughly 17 years ago. Steel corroded through at the weld. This is the third similar failure I have seen in the last few years. Starting to get concerned about the 500 odd similar clamps I am aware of in our communities....

Interesting evening - we had to rebuild a failed Tee in Fox Point the other night. One step was grinding off the “1939” stamp on the cast iron pipe.
