Milwaukee has a way of making you proud wherever you go.

I felt that strong sense of pride in Washington, D.C., speaking at MMAC’s Milwaukee Night and celebrating the people, businesses, and leaders working to make Southeast Wisconsin a stronger place to live, work, and build a future.

We may have been a thousand miles away, but Milwaukee (b**r and brats included) was very much in the room. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to bring our region’s voice to the table and highlight the work happening back home.

At yesterday’s meeting of the Board, we celebrated Latiné Heritage Month, honoring the history, culture, and contributions of Latiné communities across Milwaukee County.

It was a joy to present Milwaukee County citations to many distinguished members of our Latiné community who have made meaningful contributions to our County and continue to shape our future.

My Puerto Rican heritage is an important part of who I am and the community I serve. I’m proud to have championed legislation formally recognizing Latiné Heritage Month in Milwaukee County and uplifting the stories, history, and contributions of our Latiné communities as an important part of our County’s story.

We took another important step in shaping Milwaukee County’s future with County Executive David Crowley’s Recommended 2027 Budget.

The budget closes a $50 million gap, invests in transit, and shifts funding from Flock cameras to Right to Counsel, all while lowering the property tax rate. I’m grateful to everyone whose thoughtful work helped create this budget, and I look forward to working with my colleagues, County leadership, and our community as we work toward a final budget in November.

Latinos que hacen grande a Wisconsin: Marcelia Nicholson

En este Latino Heritage Month, reconocemos la trayectoria de una líder que ha marcado un pilar de representación y equidad en el gobierno local: Marcelia Nicholson.

Como la primera mujer afro-latina en presidir la Junta de Supervisores del Condado de Milwaukee, Marcelia ha transformado su experiencia como educadora de escuelas públicas y activista sindical en un servicio público comprometido con las familias trabajadoras.

Desde su liderazgo en el Condado, ha impulsado políticas clave orientadas a la justicia social, el aumento de salarios dignos, la inversión en parques y servicios públicos, y el desarrollo económico de nuestros barrios. Su trabajo constante demuestra el gran impacto de tener voces diversas y comprometidas al frente de las decisiones principales.

Milwaukee County’s 2027 budget process is underway.

The County Board will host its Annual Public Hearing on the 2027 Recommended Budget on:

📅 Monday, October 26
🕕 6:00 p.m.
📍 Milwaukee Art Museum - 700 N. Art Museum Drive

A budget starts with listening. This public hearing is an opportunity for Milwaukee County residents to share their priorities, ideas, and vision for our community directly with the County Board.

I invite you to join us and make your voice heard as we work together to shape Milwaukee County’s 2027 budget.

Week Without Driving is October 1–8!

This week, I’m taking the bus and encouraging Milwaukee County residents to try a different way of getting around. Take the bus, walk, bike, or roll, and get a better understanding of the barriers many nondrivers face every day.

Today, I took the bus to our Week Without Driving press conference because for thousands of people across Milwaukee County, not driving isn’t a one-week challenge. It’s just Monday. It’s getting to work, taking your child to school, seeing a doctor, buying groceries, and getting home.

That’s why public transit is Milwaukee County’s number one legislative priority, and why County Supervisor Caroline Gómez-Tom and I authored Resolution 26-688 calling on Congress to restore and increase transit funding and provide the sustainable, long-term investment our communities need to protect and strengthen service.

I also had the honor of issuing a Milwaukee County Board citation commemorating Week Without Driving, alongside proclamations from the Milwaukee County Executive, the Mayor’s Office, and the Milwaukee Common Council. The Week Without Driving initiative is about listening to riders and experiencing our transportation system differently to drive action and help maintain a system our residents can rely on.
