Today, a little more than 100 volunteers are going door-to-door to help make Milwaukee families safer by installing free smoke alarms and creating home fire escape plans.

I was proud to join the American Red Cross of Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Fire Department, and community partners this morning to kick off Sound the Alarm. As we focus on housing in Milwaukee this year, efforts like this help ensure residents not only have a place to call home, but a safe one as well.

Thank you to everyone spending their Saturday doing this important work.

It’s been one week since the MKE Peace Week Neighborhood Clean-Up and I want to take a moment to extend my deep gratitude to the many City employees, residents, and students that came out together with me to serve their neighborhoods and community that day and throughout that week. When we choose to come together like this time after time, in the big ways and in the small, it strengthens community pride and engagement helping to build a stronger and safer Milwaukee for all.

Monday looks like it will have great weather for the first Mayor’s Bike Ride series of the summer.

We’ll be riding out to experience our new and improved protected bike lanes and biking infrastructure firsthand, improvements that are making our community safer for everyone on our roads.

Bring your neighbors, your friends and family, and of course your bikes and helmets.

Thanks to our partnership with Bublr Bikes, there will also be some bikes available for those who do not have one on a first-come, first-served basis!

See you there!

Milwaukee was hit hard during the August flooding disaster last year. The impact it made and the recovery from it, especially financially, still remains a challenge for many. The road to economic recovery doesn’t have to be alone. I encourage all who qualify, to apply for SBA Relief. The deadline is fast approaching, June 11th.

To apply online, visit sba.gov/disaster. Applicants may also call SBA’s Customer Service Center at (800) 659-2955 or email [email protected] for more information on SBA disaster assistance. For people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability, please dial 7-1-1 to access telecommunications relay services.

It was an honor to speak at the Brewers and Habitat for Humanity Press Event today. Today we celebrate partnerships that are driving Milwaukee forward.

Habitat for Humanity, the Brewers Community Foundation, Prime Financial Credit Union and others have been rising to the occasion in this Year of Housing to invest in Milwaukee communities and make a true resounding impact through collaboration.

It’s powerful to look into the eyes of so many families who have achieved homeownership and with it stability. Milwaukee continues to rise as we build a city people can afford to live and thrive in.

This Memorial Day, we’ve come together as friends, family and a community to honor and pay tribute to those in uniform who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. On this day, may we be reminded of our humility for the freedoms we’ve been given and our gratitude for those who’ve protected us.

I join in remembering and honoring Lucille Berrien whose activism and leadership left a mark on our city. She passed on Friday at the age of 98. I offer my condolences to her family and friends.

In 1972, Berrien ran for mayor of Milwaukee, becoming the first Black woman to do so.

I’m joining mayors from around the country formally opposing Federal cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. In Wisconsin we call that FoodShare. Cuts to programs that provide basic needs for lower income families seem cruel while, at the same time, America spends billions fighting Iran and building a luxurious White House ballroom.

Cuts to FoodShare and Medicaid for refugees and other legal immigrants will create major gaps in nutrition and health care, advocates say.
