FLHSMV continues its efforts to warn drivers about a text message scam targeting Floridians. The scam claims the recipient has an unpaid traffic ticket or unpaid tolls and threatens to suspend their driver license and vehicle registration if payment is not made immediately through a fraudulent link. While the full extent of the scam is unknown, the threat is serious. The FLHSMV website (Consumer Education page) was updated with this information:

https://www.flhsmv.gov/safety-center/consumer-education/scam-alert/

The United States Federal Trade Commission contacted FLHSMV requesting to be added as the agency to report these scams.

(https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/ #/?orgcode=FLHSMV)

FLHSMV is aware of a recent phishing text alert scam sent to customers regarding driver license status and pending suspensions. While the full extend of the scam is unknown at this time, the threat is serious. As a reminder, if you receive any suspicious messages, do not click any links, share personal or financial information and report to your local law enforcement agency immediately. FLHSMV will never contact customers via text message demanding payment or threatening suspension or arrest.

FLHSMV has given guidance regarding the new Driver License Education Requirements for first time license applicants under 18 years of age. The law requires that effective July 1, 2025, applicants under 18 years of age applying for a driver license in Florida, must complete the new 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course to meet the minimum requirements.

Transition Period thru July 31, 2025.
Through July 31st we will continue to accept both Traffic Law Substance and Education (TLSAE) course and Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course completions.

Grandfathering Period
Individuals under 18 years of age who completed the Traffic Law Substance and Education (TLSAE) course prior to August 1, 2025.
These individuals will be grandfathered in and allowed to use their TLSAE course completion certificate for one year after the completion date
Individuals under 18 years of age who do not obtain a FL driver license within the year will be required to take the new 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course to meet requirements for issuance.

Effective August 1, 2025:
Applicants under 18 years of age will be required to complete the new 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course. The current 4-hour Traffic Law Substance and Education (TLSAE) course will no longer be accepted for applicants under 18 years of age.
The new 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course must meet or exceed the FDOE course description for Traffic Safety Classroom 1900300. Providers will be approved to administer the new course by FLHSMV through a new application process.

No Impact
Applicants under 18 years of age who already hold an out of state license transferring to Florida.
Individuals who have already obtained a Florida learner’s license prior to August 1, 2025.
Applicants 18 or older will continue to use the TLSAE course for licensure
