The new Freemanville Road bridge is coming together, with everything on track for its reopening by the end of October.

A Georgia Department of Transportation-contracted crew from Williams Contracting has been working on this project for many months, with a major milestone coming late last May when the old bridge – which inspections had deemed needed to be replaced – was shut down and taken down. Since then, workers have methodically undertaken the detailed process of building a brand new span over Cooper Sandy Creek along Freemanville south of Providence Road.

So far, so good on this State project. Recent efforts have included finishing the remaining bridge work, which primarily consists of completing the approach slabs and grooving the deck. This will be followed by final roadway items such as adding curbs, gutters, and guardrails, as well as asphalt paving and other finishing touches.

We know that anytime that a major road is closed – however necessary that might be – it’s a major inconvenience for many. We appreciate people’s patience and understanding. At least the light is at the end of the tunnel … er, bridge.

A little rain – and, at times, more than a little – didn’t stop hundreds from enjoying the sights, the sounds, the interactions, and the special small-town feel of Milton’s latest Touch-a-Truck.

Our City’s First Responders saw a very steady stream (water pun intended!) of visitors venture out Saturday to see their fire engines, police patrol vehicles, and more in Stonecreek Church’s parking lot. Kids and adults alike had a blast checking out dozens of other vehicles of various types – including food trucks that lined up for the occasion.

As rewarding, if not more so, was having families get to know people (such as our police officers and firefighters) who spend time every day working in the assorted “trucks” and other vehicles on display. Each of those connections builds community, one-by-one.

And sure, dryer weather would have been preferred. But an event like this takes months of planning, so rather than cancel it altogether we wanted to offer it to those who could make it out. We adjusted as needed, like having the DJ spin plenty of weather-related tunes. And the third and final hour was mostly dry, which we certainly appreciated.

The project at the Hopewell Road and Bethany Bend roundabout will hit another milestone Wednesday – and it could lead to some delays.

Starting sometime in late morning, crew will be pouring concrete around the roundabout. This will restrict the available travel lanes, with traffic control in place to facilitate movement among drivers. Given that, please give yourself more time than usual to navigate that intersection (or, if you can, take an alternate route).

This step is one of several related to the installation of safety countermeasures in that area as part of the City’s Safety in Action initiative. (For more context, visit www.miltonga.gov/SafetyInAction.) These include modifications to curbs, striping, and to truck apron and splitter island to reduce vehicle speeds. Signs are being adjusted and raised pavement markers added as well.

The Milton Equestrian Committee meets Wednesday to, among other things, review input from online surveys related to large lots and horse farms.

The September 16 meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall’s Council Chambers. People can attend in-person or watch online at https://meetings.municode.com/MeetingDetailsPage/index?clientCode=MILTONGA&meetingId=6f4f6736-fd64-49de-a57a-b5c7088ad0a0.

Also known as MEC, the Milton Equestrian Committee discusses matters of importance to the local equestrian community. Its seven Council-appointed members serve a valuable advisory role in sharing their insights, opinions, and expertise with City leaders and staff.

The first item that the committee will learn about and potentially weigh in on Wednesday relates to current City-led planning efforts. In recent months, the City’s Community Development Department has been working on a focused update of Milton’s Comprehensive Plan. MEC will then continue its discussion of plans for an equestrian-themed summer camp that ideally will take place in 2027. Significant progress has been made to help make this happen, though a few outstanding details remain.

Wednesday’s final agenda item pertains to a pair of online surveys that the City launched last month. Owners of horse farms and select larger lot properties received postcards in the mail asking them to complete these brief surveys. Respondents had the opportunity to share challenges they face and suggest opportunities for positive change.

At Wednesday’s meeting, City staff will share highlights from both surveys’ responses. This feedback can give the Equestrian Committee and City as a whole a better understanding of these property owners’ needs while exploring ways to support long-term ownership of large lots.

After this meeting, the Milton Equestrian Committee is next scheduled to convene on October 21.

From sourdough bread and biscuits to body care products, from craft ice cream to custom outdoor planters, from wagyu beef to 3D video game-inspired items … there should be no shortage of cool things to choose from at the next Milton Farmer’s Market.

The forecast calls for sunny skies and no chance of rain during the next market between 4 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17. In other words, great weather to come down to the market’s new home in Market District Crabapple’s brand new outdoor space off Heritage Walk (across from Hyde Brewing).

The Milton Farmers Market is scheduled for the third Wednesday of every month at this time and place through the fall. Its vendors can vary from month-to-month, but they are always high quality. So you’ll have great options whether you are looking for items for your bathroom, your pantry, or your fridge.

• Monday, September 21 -- Celebrate Mini Golf Day (9 a.m. to noon for ages 5-7; 1-4 p.m. for ages 7-12)
• Tuesday, September 22 – Adventures in STEM/STEM Explorations (9 a.m. to noon for ages 5-7; 1-4 p.m. for ages 7-12)

Improv can bring joy. Laughter. Perspective. And friends.

You can reap all those benefits, and more, by joining Milton’s first ever improv classes starting later this month.

They’re led by Amanda Rountree, a former faculty member with the renowned Second City comedy troupe in Chicago who for decades has performed and taught all around the world. And now she’s partnering with Milton Parks and Rec to immerse people in the world of improv comedy – and with that skills like listening, collaborating, problem-solving, mindfulness, and thinking on your toes.

Two classes will take place from September 22 through November 17 at Community Place, which is next to City Hall. They are:
• Improv for Fun and Socialization – open to those ages 14-18 and running weekly from 6-7 p.m.
• Improv for Fun and Connection – open to those ages 19-plus and running weekly from 7 to 9 p.m.

Rountree will also lead impro classes for middle schoolers from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturdays between October 10 and November 14.

Milton’s Board of Zoning Appeals will convene Tuesday evening to consider the variance request of a Crabapple-area property owner.

The September 15 meeting will start at 6 p.m. in City Hall. People can watch the meeting at https://meetings.municode.com/MeetingDetailsPage/index?clientCode=MILTONGA&meetingId=782b7f64-3e56-4667-bd50-a2608ca0422f or attend in-person in Council Chambers.

Also known as BZA, this committee is a quasi-judicial body that hears appeals to City decisions tied to the Unified Development Code, stream buffers, and sign permits. Its seven appointed members also vote on requests for variances from City Code, like the one up for consideration on Tuesday. The Board of Zoning Appeals’ action are guided by this Code, including Milton’s zoning standards, and can be appealed to Fulton County Superior Court.

Tuesday’s lone agendaitem relates to 115 Cannongate Court, a 2.3-acre property in the Kensington Farms neighborhood in Milton’s Crabapple area. The owner is seeking to expand an existing garage from two to three bays and, because of that, is requesting a variance to reduce the 60-foot minimum front yard frontage to 48.8 feet.

After this meeting, BZA is next scheduled to convene on October 20.

This is the "open" version of our latest National Community Survey, meaning anyone can take it. (If you got a postcard indicating you're among the households chosen for the scientific version of this survey, please follow that unique link!) It gives the City valuable datapoints to give us a fuller understanding of what our community members think, what's important to them, and how we might best serve their interests going forward.

In addition to standard questions (which can be compared with people in other cities as well as how our own residents felt in the past), Milton's NCS contains a handful of unique questions touching on economic development, pedestrian walking possibilities, and generally determining priorities.
