GPA-CNHC recently took back into our program 2 GH's whose caretaker is facing some serious medical issues and would no longer be able to care for them. He lived alone and has no family close by.
They won't be available until after the beginning of December. Bart will be going in for a dental on Tuesday.
Barts Steamboat and GLS Sapphire
I had these 2 GH’s come back into the program this week. Their caretaker will be undergoing open heart surgery on Monday. He was living alone and with no family in the area to help care for the dogs on a daily basis they are back in our care.
They have been to the vet and are up to date on all their vaccines. Heartworm negative. They did test positive for hooks. They were given a dose of drontal. Since they had negative stool in April 2024 the vet doesn’t feel it’s a resistant strain. They will be retested in a couple of weeks.
Neither dog is cat or small dog safe. With Bart’s age I’m going to have him cat tested on December 7. Sometimes after being off the track for so many years, he might be OK now. Sapphire .. never. She’s not cat … or squirrel ... or rat safe.
If Bart looks to be OK with cats, he would be able to stay with me. Sapphire can’t stay here with as I have a cat.
In a perfect world they would be rehomed together. Bart should be OK as an only dog. Sapphire will need another GH for moral support. She will need a person experienced with high prey drive GH’s. Having a fenced yard would be a plus. Sapphire still loves a good run. Bart’s is satisfied with a short lope.
I have places for them to go for the next few weeks. Right now, they are together with a large, fenced yard and a couch big enough for both.
Bart (6-6-2013) He is going in for a dental on November 25th. Praying he doesn’t need too many extractions and no complications with anesthesia.
Sapphire (12-31-2019) She is very shy at first. The couch is her safe place. I feel she depends on Bart for some courage. She will need another GH that she can lean on. With Bart’s age, sadly it’s not always going to be him. Her adopter will hopefully have another calm GH around her age to lean on.
