Red flag warnings (fire weather warnings) have been issued for a large portion of Washington state, including the western slopes of the Cascades and the Olympic Mountains. The warnings go into effect on Saturday, August 22nd. For those locations like the Cascades and Olympics, the warning is due to the risk of new fire starts from expected thunderstorms. The case is the same in Eastern Washington, except there will also be critical fire weather due to extremely low relative humidity paired with strong wind behind the incoming system. Any new fire starts will spread rapidly, and existing fires could undergo some extreme fire behavior. If you spot the source of new rising smoke form an area where there wasn’t a fire before, don’t hesitate to report it asap. Also keep an eye out for any suspicious activity, and don’t hesitate to report that kind of thing as well. 1:55PM 08-21-26
