SERVING THE MOST VULNERABLE

At any given time, there are about 1,000 children in the Santa Clara County foster care system. Every one of these children has experienced trauma in the form of abuse, neglect and/or abandonment. Every one of these children should have the opportunity to overcome the effects of trauma and thrive. We serve foster children in Silicon Valley by:

*operating the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program in Santa Clara County;
*influencing local policies and decisions that affect the children we serve;
*building enduring community partnerships to broaden and strengthen our impact. ADVOCATES MAKE A DIFFERENCE

We recruit, train and support CASA Volunteers to ensure every foster child in the Santa Clara County foster care system has a mentor and advocate to help them navigate the system and a voice reporting directly to the Court. Studies show foster children with a CASA Volunteer receive more educational and health services; are more likely to find a safe, permanent home; perform better in school; and spend less time in foster care that children without one. On Tuesday, September 1, Child Advocates of Silicon Valley proudly swore in 29 new Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Volunteers! Within this cohort of graduating CASAs we are delighted to have three bilingual Spanish speakers, five male advocates, 12 languages represented, and three volunteers who identify as LGBTQ+!

“Through each graduation, we witness the passion and eagerness our community has to LIFTING UP our foster youth. With this class being one of our most diverse, we’re thrilled to connect our foster youth with CASA Volunteers who will advocate and understand them,” shares Child Advocates CEO Frederick J. Ferrer.

On Saturday, August 15, Veggielution partnered with Child Advocates of Silicon Valley to provide foster youth with a day of nature exploration alongside their Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Volunteer.

Enjoying the beautiful summer weather, nine CASAs and 12 kids rolled up their sleeves for some gardening at Veggielution. Together they:

🖌️ Crafted with natural materials
🍅 Harvested and ate fresh veggies
🍈 Learned gardening techniques
🌱 Got messy as they uncovered nature’s treasures

Our foster youth and Court Appointed Child Advocates (CASAs) visited the 49ers training camp and community corner during Nonprofit Day! Together, they enjoyed a behind-the-scenes look at training camp, watched practice from an exclusive viewing area, and were thrilled to meet members of the team; even linebacker Fred Warner stopped by to sign autographs and take pictures with the youth.

This month, Child Advocates is spotlighting CASA Mark for his commitment to going above and beyond for our foster youth.

A father of three boys, Mark has spent the last 25 years as a sports coach to his children and many young men in his community, taking on the role of mentor. But as his kids grew up and his schedule opened up in retirement, he searched for a longer-term opportunity to make a difference. Mark found that becoming a CASA was just what he was looking for, an opening to expand on what he’s passionate about—being a support system for male youth.
