During this weekend’s Nor’easter, our team was able to utilize DE Emergency Management Agency ‘s EVAC-1 specialized high-water asset to assist the Sussex County fire service with various flood water responses. We staffed the unit with 3 swift water technicians and completed 7 different missions including medical calls, vehicles in flood water, and a police-related incident.

Boat operators coming in hot!!! 9 members of our team completed the 3-day Rescue Boat Operator course provided by Rescue 3 International. J-turns, eddy’s, pinning, manikin saves and so much more. We had fun while learning a lot to help save you in the water!

Our team was alerted to assist Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Company for a trench rescue collapse with injuries. Upon arrival, 1 victim was found in an unsecured trench with injuries. Rescue technicians worked quickly to secure the trench allowing for a safe extrication. The rescue was successful due to the cooperation of numerous agencies including Seaford Vol. Fire Department Greenwood Fire Blades Volunteer Fire Company Georgetown Fire Sussex County EMS & HazMat DSP Aviation Kent Spec Ops and others!

9 members of our team, members of NCCSPECIALOPS and local fire departments completed the NFPA and FEMA rated Inland Rescue Swimmer course this past weekend. This was one of the first steps to our team establishing a surface water rescue team. The course was challenging and we thank Rescue 3 International Atlantic Technical Rescue for providing the instruction!

Yesterday, our team was alerted to assist Bethany Beach Fire with a vehicle into a structure with entrapment. Members of our team on scene assisted with patient extrication and securing the structure for vehicle removal.

Earlier this week, our team was alerted to assist the Millsboro Fire Company with a vehicle into a structure. Our team placed a T-spot shore to allow for the removal of the damaged items. This was replaced with a 2-post vertical shore to allow the wrecker operator to safely remove the vehicle without obstructions. Great job by both organizations to complete the mission!

Sussex County Technical Rescue is expanding its capabilities! Thanks to DE Emergency Management Agency for working so hard to support the special operations of the Delaware fire service! Now every special operation team in DE is swift water response capable. But it’s just not the boats, we also received new structural and trench rescue equipment, PPE, communication equipment, and air monitoring equipment! The truck is loaded!
