On June 8, 2026, Abigail VanVorst from Seaford, DE received the $1,000 Clyde Smith Community Service Scholarship Award from the Kiwanis Club of Greater Millsboro at her Sussex Tech High School Awards Night. This award is presented annually to the Sussex Tech Key Club member who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to helping others. Abby has for several years served as an officer in her Key Club and will be attending Regent University in Virginia Beach where she plans to major in psychology so as to continue to help others. Abby is shown in the picture receiving the award from Lt. Governor Darlene Phillips of the Capital District Kiwanis.

As has been tradition for many years, the Georgetown Kiwanis Club sponsored the Memorial Day ceremony on the Circle there in their town. The Master of Ceremonies was State Senator, Brian Pettyjohn , and the guest speaker was US Army Lt. Colonel John Fisher, retired, who now lives locally and is a ‘84 graduate of Sussex Central.
Memorial wreaths were displayed by a number of military and local service organizations, including three local Kiwanis Clubs from Georgetown, Coastal and Greater Millsboro. Shown in the photo before the display of wreaths is Capital District Division 5 Lt. Governor, Darlene Phillips. She and her husband, Scott Phillips, presented the wreath from the Greater Millsboro Kiwanis Club earlier.

The Foundation’s largest fund raiser happens at the Capital District Kiwanis Convention in August. All proceeds support our 11 designated pediatric trauma centers spread throughout the Capital District in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. All Capital District clubs - be sure to look over the following list of items that we are collecting to put into bags to give the children served by the Nemours Children’s Hospital in Delaware. These will be assembled at our Mid Year Capital District Conference on Saturday, February 28th. Nemours is one of 11 pediatric hospitals served by the Capital District Kiwanis Foundation and the only one on the Delmarva peninsula/Division 5. Contact Susan at the number listed if you need to make arrangements to get the items to this conference to be held in Cambridge, MD 2/27 - 3/1/26 at the beautiful waterfront Chesapeake Hyatt.
