Petty Officer 1st Class Jackson Dyer, a native of Seattle, Washington, serves in the U.S. Navy and is assigned to Unmanned Patrol Squadron 19 (VUP-19), the Navy’s first unmanned patrol and reconnaissance squadron.

Dyer graduated from Lewis-Palmer High School in 2020. Additionally, Dyer is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Columbia College.

The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Seattle.

“Growing up near the water and around aviation, I was surrounded by people interested in avionics,” Dyer said. “A lot of my classmates’ parents worked at Boeing, so many of us wanted to work with planes and pursue jobs in aviation. The Pacific Northwest is also a place where having business-like social tact is crucial to survival. People skills help a lot in aviation environments in the Navy, specifically in one where you are expected to work in a high-stress environment with people from different backgrounds.”

Dyer joined the Navy six years ago. Today, Dyer serves as a naval aircrewman (operator).

Lt. Cmdr. Kevin Skelly, a native of Sacramento, California, serves in the U.S. Navy and is assigned to Unmanned Patrol Squadron 19 (VUP-19), the Navy’s first unmanned patrol and reconnaissance squadron.

Skelly graduated from Rio Americano High School in 2008 and received a bachelor’s degree in economics from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in 2012.

The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Sacramento.

“I was team captain of my varsity baseball team, and that taught me to be a team player and lead people,” Skelly said. “I played a lot of different sports and always had a team aspect to my personality and my way of leading.”

Skelly joined the Navy 12 years ago. Today, Skelly serves as a naval flight officer.

“I joined because I always wanted to serve in naval aviation,” Skelly said. “My mom sent me a newspaper article that said, ‘military pilots needed.’ I went to all the different services, and the Navy was the most interested. I didn’t find out later that my eyes disqualified me from flying, and I actually ended up loving the naval flight officer path.”

Naval History and Heritage Command visited Lake Champlain Maritime Museum during to give a deep dive on how the U.S. Navy recovered a Howell Torpedo, which was lost at sea in 1899, with the help of specially trained dolphins! 🐬⚓

It's official!

I’ve proclaimed this week as Navy Week here in Vermont, as we’re one of just 12 communities nationwide selected to host.

Vermonters take great pride in supporting the fast-attack submarines, the USS Vermont and USS Montpelier, and the Military Sealift Command’s fast expeditionary transport ship, USNS Burlington.

We’re proud to welcome the Navy to Vermont and are grateful for all the sailors who have stepped up to serve our country.
