The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) today Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2019. The test will not include a message on cell phones via Wireless Emergency Alerts. The nationwide test will be sent to radio and television stations beginning at 2:20 p.m. EDT.

Storms capable of producing heavy rainfall are expected across the area this afternoon and into the evening. This rain may lead to localized rainfall amounts of up to 3 inches. Much of the rain may fall in short periods of time resulting in the risk for flash flooding.

Slow moving showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop after 1 PM this afternoon before diminishing early this evening. Torrential rainfall rates may lead to totals exceeding 2 inches in a short period of time. This may cause flash flooding of small streams and other poor drainage urban areas.

Police in Darwin, Australia are confirming four dead in a shooting incident. The gunman opened fire at several locations. He has been arrested.

Police have confirmed that 12 people are dead and at least 6 have been injured in a workplace-related shooting at the Virginia Beach Municipal Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Besides the 11 victims, the shooting suspect was apprehended and later died according to Virginia Beach Police Chief Jim Cevera. Cevera said that the shooter was a city employee.
