Anne Arundel County Professional Fire Fighters

Anne Arundel County Professional Fire Fighters IAFF Local 1563 represents nearly 900 full-time professional fire fighters and paramedics. We are the Anne Arundel County Professional Firefighters Association.

Headquartered in Millersville, Maryland, we serve and protect the 600,000 citizens of Anne Arundel County. We are the labor organization that represents more than 900 career Firefighter/EMT’s, Paramedics, Lieutenants, and Captains at 30 fire stations throughout Anne Arundel County, as well as support roles throughout the administrative bureaus such as dispatchers, fire marshals, academy training staff, and many others. Our members respond to nearly 90,000 incidents annually, including building fires, motor vehicle collisions, and medical emergencies, as well highly technical rescues from heights like the Bay Bridge, and from dangerous hazardous materials. We are dedicated to keeping our citizens safe by advocating for the equipment, and personnel that we need to get the job done. Historically, we were short-staffed. The National Standard for the number of fire fighters on a fire engine (the one that carries the water) is 3, and for the fire truck (the one with the ladders) the standard is 4. In the past, we often responded to emergencies with just 2 people. We are proud to be approaching those minimums, but still have a ways to go. We look forward to continuing to work with our partners in the County Executive's office, and on the County Council to make complete compliance with the National Standards a reality. That said, you can always count on us to be there when you need us. We work in 24 hour shifts, 365 days a year. Feel free to say “hello” to us when you see us at the grocery story, and out in the community. We know that the safety of loved ones remains a top priority for every citizen, and we are committed to delivering the excellence that is expected of us.

Congratulations to Joe Addivinola, President Emeritus!

IAFF Local 1563 is proud to announce that our Executive Board voted unanimously to name Past President Joe Addivinola as President Emeritus, following a petition from our members in good standing.

Joe joined Local 1563 after graduating from the Anne Arundel County Fire Academy and gave over 20 years to this union, serving as Shop Steward, Executive Board member, 2nd Vice President, and finally President from 2015 to 2026: the longest-seated President in Local 1563 history.

Under his leadership, Joe fought to improve wages, benefits, and working conditions for our county's fire fighters and paramedics, protected quality healthcare for active and retired members and their families, and helped restore a step pay scale for the department.

"Joe gave this Local steady leadership through a lot of change, and he never lost sight of who he was doing it for," said Local 1563 President Casey Cameron. "Officers and members have gone to him for advice and mentorship for years, and many of us still do. This honor recognizes everything he has given to this membership."

Thank you for your service and leadership, Joe! 🙌

**Anne Arundel County's Fire Fighters back a bipartisan slate of candidates for County Executive and County Council**

Millersville, Md.- The Anne Arundel County Professional Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 1563, representing over 900 career fire fighters in Anne Arundel County, today announced its endorsements for the 2026 general election. The union is backing a bipartisan slate of candidates it says have demonstrated a strong record on public safety, fire and EMS staffing, and support for the men and women who respond to emergencies across the county.

Local 1563 is endorsing:

Allison Pickard for Anne Arundel County Executive
Kelly Smith for County Council, District 1
Catelyn Middlebrooks for County Council, District 2
Nathan Volke for County Council, District 3
Amanda Fiedler for County Council, District 5
Gavin Buckley for County Council, District 6

"These candidates have earned our members' trust because they understand what it takes to keep Anne Arundel County safe," said Casey Cameron, President of IAFF Local 1563. "Whether it's staffing levels, response times, or the resources our fire fighters and paramedics need to do their jobs, this group has shown up for our members, and we're proud to stand behind them heading into November."

Local 1563's endorsement process included candidate interviews and a review of voting records and public statements on issues affecting fire and emergency medical service in the county. The union says its endorsements reflect a commitment to public safety that crosses party lines.

"Public safety isn't a partisan issue, and our endorsements this cycle show that," Cameron added. "We're supporting candidates from both parties because they've each made clear they'll fight for the resources our first responders need.".

Happy Labor Day from the Anne Arundel County Professional Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 1563.

Today is set aside to honor working people.

In 1965, nine Anne Arundel County fire fighters chartered this Local. Sixty years later we are the largest organized public safety union in Anne Arundel County, representing more than 1,000 active and retired professional fire fighters and paramedics. Everything we have was won by the members who came before us.

To the residents of Anne Arundel County, thank you for the support you show our members every day. And to every fire fighter and medic working this holiday so that others can be home with their families, thank you.

Happy Labor Day. Stay safe.

Professional fire fighters from Prince George’s County, Howard County, Fort Meade, and BWI assisted with the incident.
