Buckeye Lake State Park

Buckeye Lake State Park Ohio's oldest state park is a cherished day-use gem. In the 1940s and '50s, it featured an amusement park and a dance hall.

Once a feeder lake for Ohio's canal system in the 1800s, Buckeye Lake has been a magnet for tourists since the canal era ended.

The park staff along with members of the dredge crew will be working this week to remove the buoys for the winter. Please give our work barge the Right of Way if you’re out on the lake. The barge will be accompanied by 2 small work boats. They are used to pull the buoys back to the work barge.
The lake drawdown will start on November 15th. Please stay safe out there this fall!
Thanks to all for a great summer!

Thanks,

Buckeye Lake Dam residents:

We will not be mowing the 4 mile dam this week 9/1/25. The grass is going dormant from the lack of rain. We will now mow the dam every other week or as needed. We wanted to keep everyone in the loop.

Thanks,

We're excited to be part of this new America 250-Ohio trail that celebrates the history of Ohio's waterways!

Ohio’s waterways aren’t just pretty views — they’re the lifeblood of our history.
From the waves of Lake Erie to the banks of the Ohio River, these “highways of hope” built towns, fueled industry, and connected communities for generations.

The new Lake Erie to Ohio River Trail from America 250-Ohio invites you to follow their path with 150 sites across the state — including 17 Ohio state parks.

🚤 Ride a ferry to an island getaway.
🌊 Stand in the shadow of historic lighthouses.
🚶‍♀️ Walk along old canal towpaths.
🌿 Take in the views from river overlooks.

It’s the third of six new driving trails leading up to the nation’s 250th birthday — and your ticket to exploring the stories written in Ohio’s waters.

Water level update:
The staff at Buckeye Lake State Park doesn't open and close the state route 79 spillway during the summer season. The gate is opened automatically based on the amount of head pressure against the gate. If the rain increases the volume of water in the lake it will mechanically open and close on its own. This is to prevent the Dam from overtopping during heavy rain events. This past week there was a log that got caught under the gate which prevented the gate from closing. Our staff freed the debris and the gate closed again. The gate is steel against concrete, so there is no perfect seal. There will always be some water spraying through the gate.
The Spillway along North bank Road will also allow water to escape from the lake if we are 8 inches above summer pool. That is the way it was designed to work, again preventing the dam from overtopping.
Drawdown schedule starts November 15th of each year and the gates are closed on March 1st of each year to allow the spring rains to fill up the lake.
You can monitor the lake levels in real time on the USGS Watkins Island site. https://waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-location/395540082291600/ =continuous-00045-0&period=P7D&showMedian=true

This site measures rainfall and lake levels. You can select which one you would like to view. under data type.

Summer pool is 891.63 ft
Winter pool elevation is 888.63 ft.

We are currently 2 inches below summer pool.

Have a great day!
