Watch the chipmunk by the steps this fall.

Its cheeks are stretched wide with acorns and seeds, and nearly every trip ends at the same small hole in the ground.

Below that entrance may be a burrow with 20 to 30 feet of tunnel, a sleeping chamber, and separate rooms for storing food. By autumn, those underground pantries are being filled with nuts and seeds carried home one cheek-pouch load at a time.

That food matters.

Eastern chipmunks do not rely on huge stores of body fat to make it through winter. As temperatures fall, they retreat underground and cycle through periods of torpor. Their body temperature and metabolism drop dramatically, conserving energy while food is scarce.

Then, periodically, they wake.

They warm themselves, eat from the food they spent autumn collecting, and eventually settle back into torpor. Some even venture outside during stretches of mild winter weather.

There is no single day when every chipmunk closes the door until spring. Timing depends on weather and location.

But those frantic autumn trips have a purpose.

Every acorn carried underground is another meal waiting for winter.
