These two examples are not in North Carolina but it is happening here as well.

For a lot of volunteer fire departments, budgets have shifted and a lot have went to having part time during the week during the day and having volunteers. We are one of those. Some have been able to provide some full time staffing but most can’t afford it. We are one of those as well that can’t afford full time staff. We have to have volunteers. We rely on our volunteers very heavily.

If you want to see what we are about, come out and visit, see what it takes to volunteer.

Fire departments are struggling to recruit as the number of unpaid firefighters drops to the lowest level since 1991 https://www.investigatetv.com/2026/06/11/volunteer-firefighter-shortage-threatens-communities-nationwide/

Today on duty members along with Wilkes Fire Marshals Office replaced old, out of date smoke detectors, placed new smoke detectors where there was not a detector and helped replace batteries.

Working smoke detectors save lives!!
Also sleep with your bedroom door shut. See our page for a video about conditions on the other side of the door and what a closed door can do during a fire.

Smoke detectors were part of a grant through NC Office of State Fire Marshal.

Smoke detectors should be replace every 10 years.
