Huge thanks to Jay Kim, owner of Sunny Scrambled , for treating the squad to some absolutely ridiculous breakfast sandwiches before the Millburn Memorial Day Parade.

We had members getting ready to march, staff the ambulance, and cover the town, and Jay made sure nobody was doing it on an empty stomach.

Local support like this means a lot to our volunteers. It keeps us fueled, it keeps us moving, and yes, it probably improved morale by at least 400%.

Thank you, Jay, and thank you Sunny Scrambled, for supporting the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad.

Thank you to our friends at Willow & Whisk for treating the squad to breakfast this morning before the Millburn Memorial Day Parade.

Marching is serious business. Marching after a good meal is better.

MSHVFAS is proud to participate in this year’s Millburn Memorial Day Parade.

Memorial Day is a time to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. As our community gathers for the parade and ceremony, we are honored to stand alongside our neighbors, local organizations, veterans, public safety partners, and the families who keep that memory alive.

The parade begins at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 25, starting at Millburn High School and continuing to Taylor Park, with the ceremony scheduled for 11:45 AM.

We hope to see many of you along the route as Millburn comes together in remembrance.

For today’s National EMS Week installment, we want to give a nod to Millburn Standard.

Their team recently signed up for one of our community CPR classes and got certified.

When most people think about the emergency medical system, they think about ambulances, EMTs, paramedics, hospitals, radios, dispatchers, and equipment.

All true.

But one of the most important parts of the emergency medical system is often the person standing nearby when something goes wrong.

A cardiac arrest, choking emergency, severe bleeding, or other sudden medical event can happen anywhere: at home, at work, in a restaurant, on the sidewalk, at school, or during a normal day that suddenly stops being normal.

The first few minutes matter. Sometimes the person who makes the difference is not wearing a uniform. Sometimes it is a coworker, a neighbor, a server, a manager, a teacher, a parent, or a passerby who learned what to do.

That is why community CPR training matters.

Thank you to Millburn Standard for taking the initiative and helping make our community a little more prepared.

As we continue marking National EMS Week, we’re sharing another “Why I Volunteer” story from the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad.

This one comes from Melissa Campbell, who joined the Squad in 2010 and served as an EMT, Crew Chief, and Captain. In her reflection, Melissa wrote about starting because she wanted to do something meaningful for the community, then realizing over time how much the Squad would become part of her life.

That is a pretty good description of volunteer EMS.

People often see the ambulance, the lights, the response, and the call itself. What they do not always see is everything behind it: the schedules, the training, the mentoring, the crew coordination, the equipment checks, the late nights, the family sacrifices, and the quiet work required to keep a volunteer organization moving.

Melissa captured that well:

Volunteer EMS is not just answering calls. It is helping people find where they fit, making sure members feel supported, and building a team that can keep showing up when the community needs help.

That part matters.

Because the strength of a volunteer squad is not just measured in call volume. It is measured in the people who stay, lead, teach, support one another, and make the organization stronger for the next crew.

Melissa’s story is also a reminder that the Squad gives something back. Skills. Friendships. Responsibility. Purpose. The chance to be part of something bigger than yourself.

That is why people volunteer.

And that is why, during National EMS Week, we are proud to recognize the members who have helped make the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad what it is today.

As we kick off National EMS Week we’re sharing a throwback and honoring one of our longtime members: James Felzenberg.

Back in 2016, James wrote about why he volunteers with the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad. He talked about wanting to give back to the community, learning new skills, serving on crews, and being part of something meaningful.

Today, James has been with the Squad for 15 years. Many people step forward with good intentions. Far fewer keep answering calls, checking rigs, leading crews, and helping run the organization 15 years later.

Over those years, he has served as an EMT, Crew Chief, Line Officer, and Trustee. He is now one of the people helping make sure our ambulances are stocked, updated, equipped, and ready to respond when the next emergency call comes in. He also serves on our Board of Trustees, helping support the future of the organization.

That work does not always happen in the spotlight, but it matters every single day.

Volunteer EMS depends on people who keep showing up, year after year, call after call, meeting after meeting, checklist after checklist. James is one of those people.

Please join us in thanking James Felzenberg for 15 years of service to the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad and to our community.

We’re honored to see this story shared by Patch

Hetherington’s journey from surviving a cardiac arrest in 2022 to returning as a volunteer EMT is an incredible reminder of what service, resilience and community support can mean. We’re also proud to see Hannah Ma, Wilson Cabrera and Captain Kevin Ryan recognized alongside him, each representing a different path to the same commitment: showing up for Millburn-Short Hills when neighbors need help most.

Together, their stories reflect the heart of volunteer EMS and the people who make it possible every day.
