On the morning of September 11, 2001, our country was attacked.

Thousands of people who had simply gone to work that morning, pursuing their lives, supporting their families and pursuing the American dream, were murdered.

Eight Millburn Township residents were among those we lost.

Thousands more were stranded in New York City, desperate to reach their loved ones, receive treatment for their injuries, or simply find a way home. The city had become a massive triage zone.

When commuter trains began running again, people started returning home across the tri-state area. They were exhausted, shaken, injured and carrying the physical and emotional weight of what they had experienced.

Community ambulance squads, EMS agencies and first responders across the region were there to care for them as they returned home.

The Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad was among them.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the eight members of our community who never came home, everyone lost that day, and all those who answered the call to help.

The Millburn Squad remains here today, ready to serve. All Volunteer, free of charge to anyone in our community.

The 28th Annual Millburn Fire Department Open House is on Saturday, October 10 from Noon to 2 pm at 459 Essex St.

Support Fire Prevention Week and stop by to learn about fire safety, climb aboard a fire truck, and get some ice cream from the Scream Truck.

This year, we are also celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Millburn Fire Department.

On Sunday, October 18 at 9:00 a.m., join us for the inaugural Millburn-Short Hills First Aid 5K, a fun, family-friendly morning bringing our community together.

Run or walk the scenic 5K through South Mountain Reservation, with both timed and untimed options available.

Then, after you cross the finish line, come visit us at the squad for our Open House! Tour our ambulances, see the equipment we use on emergency calls, meet our volunteer EMTs, and learn what it takes to serve your community as an EMT. Refreshments will follow the race.

For nearly 70 years, the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad has served our community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our EMTs are entirely volunteer, and our services are completely free of charge.

Come on your own, bring the family, grab some friends, or put together a team. Run, walk, cheer—or just stop by the Open House and say hello!

We’ve nominated H. Steven Roth for the 2026 EMS Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the New Jersey Department of Health’s Office of Emergency Medical Services at the National Conference on EMS.

Steve has served with the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad for more than 30 years. He has answered thousands of calls, led the organization through years of change and helped keep an independent, community-funded, 100 percent volunteer EMS service operating around the clock without billing patients.

And he still rides. Steve works a regular 12-hour shift every week, along with an additional weekend shift every two months.

As our longtime president, Steve supports his line officers, shares the institutional knowledge that keeps the Squad running and gives people room to move new ideas and community programs forward.

Steve has been missing dinners, running out in the middle of the night and dropping phone calls for more than three decades. We’re proud to put his name forward.

Happy Fourth of July, and happy 250th, America.

As we celebrate with family, friends, flags, and fireworks, we also pause to remember the men and women who served, sacrificed, and paid the ultimate price for the freedoms we enjoy.

World War II medic Desmond Doss is remembered for a simple prayer:

“Lord, please help me get one more.”

One more life. One more chance to serve. One more person brought home.

To our volunteers, our neighbors, and everyone who continues to answer the call, thank you.
