Congratulations to Officers Derek Bindels and Julian Frayre, who graduated yesterday from the Santa Rosa Public Safety Training Center Police Academy and have officially joined the Mill Valley Police Department.

Graduating the academy is a major milestone, but it’s only the beginning. Both officers now start the next phase of their training as they learn the community, develop their skills in the field, and prepare to serve Mill Valley.

Please join us in welcoming Officer Bindels and Officer Frayre to MVPD. And congratulations on a well-earned accomplishment.

🚨UPDATE ON FIRE INVESTIGATION🚨

Mill Valley Police Department would like to thank the community for their help identifying the individuals we posted photos of regarding the fire at the First Church of Christ, Scientists on Camino Alto. These individuals are cooperating with the investigation.

The officer who sustained injuries during this Call of Service is recovering. Thank you all for your concern. We appreciate your continued well wishes.

We would like to reiterate that this is an isolated incident and not connected to the Hillside fire earlier this month.

🚨Community Assistance Needed🚨

Fire Investigation

The Mill Valley Police Department needs your assistance in identifying the individuals pictured in connection with an ongoing investigation.

On Sunday, August 23, 2026, at approximately 9:00 p.m., the Mill Valley Police Department responded to a report of a possible fire in the 200 block of Camino Alto. While an officer attempted to extinguish the fire, an object within exploded, causing the officer to sustain moderate injuries.

Fire investigators determined the object contained multiple combustible items, including aerosol containers.

Anyone who recognizes the individuals pictured, has information about this incident, or has surveillance footage from the area around that time is asked to contact Mill Valley Police Detective Sergeant David Kollerer at 415-389-4100 or [email protected]

INCIDENT UPDATE: Vegetation Fire – Hillside Avenue / Blithedale Ridge

Mill Valley, CA — At approximately 4:42 p.m., Mill Valley Police Officers responded alongside Southern Marin Fire and mutual-aid partners to a vegetation fire in the area between Hillside Avenue and Blithedale Ridge. MVPD personnel immediately secured the perimeter, managed local traffic control, and issued safety advisories for nearby residents.

Thanks to the rapid response from fire crews, forward progress of the fire was stopped around 6:10 p.m. at approximately 1.5 acres. No evacuation notices are in place.
Officers will remain in the area for the next several hours assisting fire personnel with traffic management and public safety as crews work to extinguish remaining hot spots and secure the area. Please continue to avoid the immediate vicinity of Hillside Avenue to allow emergency vehicles unhindered access.

We deeply appreciate our community’s prompt cooperation with safety advisories and thank all responding partner agencies for their swift, coordinated effort.

The Mill Valley Police Department has recently received numerous calls of scammers posing as police officers or deputies.

The caller claims you owe money due to a warrant, missed jury duty, or another legal matter and pressuring you to make a payment. They may demand payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, or other unusual ways.

Please Remember:
🚫Law enforcement agencies will never ask you to make a payment over the phone with gift cards or cryptocurrency.

If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from a law enforcement agency, hang up and call our non-emergency line to verify the information. 415-389-4100

Please help protect our community by sharing this information with friends, family, and neighbors.
