Fallingwater has always been a place for inspired thinking! When Edgar Kaufmann jr. entrusted Fallingwater and its surrounding property to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in 1963, he envisioned a place where artists, scholars and lovers of nature and the arts could explore new ideas.

Today, the Fallingwater Institute continues that vision through its Artist and Scholar-in-Residence Program, welcoming emerging and established creatives from a wide range of disciplines to live, study and work at Fallingwater.

Applications for 2028 residencies open September 1, 2026, through January 17, 2027. Residents receive on-site housing, a $1,000 stipend, studio access, transportation support and exceptional access to Fallingwater and Bear Run Nature Reserve.

Today we celebrate the posthumous birthday of Elsie Henderson (1913-2021).

Elsie, renowned for her role as the Kaufmanns' personal cook, was a remarkably charismatic and passionate individual who has played an invaluable role in the Fallingwater story. She forged enduring bonds with the Kaufmann family and their summer residence, Fallingwater. Even after its transformation into a museum, Elsie often returned to engage with the staff.

Her recollections have deepened our understanding of the home's inner life, offering unique insights into the tastes and characters of the family and their guests.
