This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. ❤️🤍💙

As we spend time outdoors with loved ones, explore the beauty of our preserves, and enjoy the peaceful trails and meadows around us, we are reminded of the freedoms we are fortunate to experience each day.

From all of us at North Shore Wildlife Sanctuary, we wish you a meaningful Memorial Day filled with reflection, gratitude, and time in nature.

What an incredible evening for our Annual Spring Gathering 🌿

We are truly overwhelmed by the support shown for the North Shore Wildlife Sanctuary. To everyone who attended, donated, participated in our raffles and silent auction, and helped make the evening such a success — thank you. Your generosity directly supports our mission to preserve and enhance native habitats for the wildlife and birds that call our preserves home.

A heartfelt thank you to Mill Creek Catering for the absolutely delicious food and to the beautiful Mill River Rod & Gun Club for hosting us on such a stunning waterfront setting.

Most importantly, this event was a beautiful reminder of what can happen when a community comes together in support of conservation, education, and protecting the natural beauty of the North Shore. We are so grateful to each and every one of you who came out to support our mission.

Stay tuned… more photos from this wonderful evening to come! 📸

🐢 Well… shell-o again! Another turtle sighting at the preserve!

Our Outdoor Program Director, Dan Kriesberg, spotted yet another beautiful female box turtle on the move — and yes, it’s nesting season! These incredible creatures are actively searching for safe nesting sites, which means you may be lucky enough to spot one on your next stroll through nature. 🌿

Fun fact: female box turtles can travel surprising distances to find the perfect place to lay their eggs… and according to Dan, this one even stopped for a worm snack along the way! 🪱

If you see one, admire from a distance and please do not touch — let her continue her important journey.

Keep your eyes open at Shu Swamp Preserve… turtle season is officially having a moment. 🐢💚

🐢 It’s snapping turtle nesting season!

If you’ve noticed more movement near roads, trails, or open sandy areas — you’re not imagining it. Female snapping turtles are on the move, searching for safe places to lay their eggs.

This time of year is a great reminder to slow down and stay alert, especially near wetlands, preserves, and wooded roadways. A little extra patience behind the wheel can make a big difference for our local wildlife.

Nature is busy this season — let’s help protect it. 💚

📸 Keep an eye out and, if safe to do so, share your wildlife sightings with us!

Now we’re voting… are they our favorite Shu Swamp duo? We think YES. 🫶

Our Habitat Restoration Project is more than restoring landscapes — it’s about protecting the future of wildlife across our preserves. 🌿

From Shu Swamp to Coffin Woods, Pennoyer Woods, Merrill Meadows, and Matinecock Farms, we are working to replace invasive species with native plantings to create healthier habitats for birds, pollinators, mammals, and aquatic life.

This is a long-term commitment to conservation — and you can be a part of it.

By becoming a member or making a donation, you help us continue restoring and protecting the natural spaces that make our community so special for generations to come.

Visit the link in our bio to learn more, become a member, or donate today. Together, we can help restore the landscape and preserve our wild life.
