The Department is dedicated to serving the citizens of our town in times of emergencies and public service.

The Milford Fire Department is led by Fire Chief Douglas A. Edo, (also Emergency Management Director for the City of Milford) and is comprised of 113 fire personnel, 8 fire dispatchers and 5 civilian personnel. The Department consists of four active fire stations, a vehicle / apparatus repair facility, maintenance shop, and a “special services unit” building. The Department also received, in 2013, use of a decommissioned Army repair facility. Under the direction of the Chief are two Assistant Chiefs, one in command of Operations and one in command of Administration. The Operations Chief is responsible for the day to day activities of the department as well as fire ground operations and Standard Operating Procedures. The Operations Chief also reviews training needs, equipment inventories, and Firefighter safety. The Administration Chief oversees the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the Department. The Administration Chief also serves as the Fire Marshal; directing Fire Prevention and Inspections as well as the Fire Investigation Division. The Department also staffs additional administrative duties that include two Battalion Chiefs and two Captains. Their responsibilities include planning for all logistical situations, formulating and executing long term goals. They are responsible for department personnel training and securing budgetary needs through planning and grant writing. In addition, other responsibilities include Safety Officer, Haz-Mat Technician and EMS Officer.

This morning, Milford hosted a ceremonial service at Live Oaks Elementary School at the World Trade Center Memorial Garden. The community gathered to remember and honor the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost 25 years ago today. Live Oaks Elementary is one of three memorial sites throughout Milford dedicated to remembering the three Milford residents who lost their lives that day.

Several Live Oaks 5th grade students joined the ceremony to perform America the Beautiful. Involving our youth in these ceremonies is important to ensure that the tragic and heroic stories of September 11th are passed on to future generations. We must never forget.

The fire service holds a special place in its heart for the 343 men and women of the FDNY that made the ultimate sacrifice at the Twin Towers. Thousands more have suffered and continue to suffer from the rescue efforts that followed in the months after the attack.

25 years ago today, was not only the most tragic loss of life in the American fire service but was undoubtably, the single greatest rescue mission in fire service history. REMEMBER THE FALLEN, HONOR THE SURVIVORS, NEVER FORGET!

In the last 30 days, Milford Fire Department responded to 820 calls for service. These calls included, nearly 550 medical responses, 8 fires including cars, brush and buildings, 3 water rescue calls, 1 building collapse rescue and an elevator rescue, just to name a few.

During the "microburst" on the morning of August 13th, we responded to over a dozen trees into houses. Luckily there were no injuries reported as a result of the storm.

The Milford Fire Department, in collaboration with Milford Public Works and Stuart White Fire Protection Engineers, will be conducting a "Fire Extinguisher Collection Day" on Saturday September 5th, 2026 to collect old/unused fire extingisher cylinders. The collection is for Milford Residents only and proof of residency will be required. There is no cost for this collection.

The collection will take place at 55 Seemans Lane, Milford CT between 8:00am and 12:00 pm.

PAULIE’S PUSH COMES THROUGH MILFORD!!! Paulie's Push

Today, the Milford Fire Department was honored to welcome Paulie Veneto and Paulie’s Push team as they made their way through Milford on their journey to New York City.

Paulie is pushing an airline beverage cart more than 1,000 miles from Boston to Ground Zero, honoring the flight crews and aviation professionals who were among the FIRST, first responders 25 years ago on September 11, 2001.

This journey is called "Everyone's Push" and is about remembrance, honoring sacrifice, and making sure the stories of all those who were lost are never forgotten.

The Milford Fire Department is proud to support and walk alongside Paulie. Along the way, Paulie stopped to greet supporters, share stories, and encourage others to push a cart with him. "It's not a race; it's about never forgetting!"

Mayor Rich Smith, Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners Kevin McGrath and members of the Milford Kiwanis Club met Paulie on Milford green to help spread the word and show support. The Milford Fire Department continued to es**rt Paulie and his team to the end of his journey for the day at Dockside Restaurant.

Thursday 8/27/26 marks the first day of school in Milford!

As students head back to school, we’re asking everyone to take a few extra moments to help keep our children, families, school staff and emergency responders safe.

A safe school year starts with all of us doing our part. From everyone at the Milford Fire Department, we wish all of our students, teachers, staff, and families a safe and successful school year!

🚸 Slow Down in School Zones
Watch for children crossing streets, school buses, and increased pedestrian traffic. Obey posted speed limits and never pass a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing.

🚌 Give School Buses Plenty of Room
Stop when required and remain alert around bus stops. Children may enter the roadway unexpectedly.

🚶 Stay Alert Around Crosswalks
Put the phone down and watch for pedestrians. Make eye contact with children and other pedestrians before proceeding.

🏠 Prepare for Emergencies at Home
Make sure your family knows your home escape plan, has working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and knows how to call 911.

🎒 Talk to Your Children About 911
Children should know their home address, how to recognize an emergency, and when and how to call 911.

🚗 Keep Emergency Access Clear
Avoid blocking fire hydrants, fire lanes, driveways, and emergency access areas during school drop-off and pickup. Seconds matter when firefighters and paramedics are responding to an emergency.

Slow down. Stay alert. Leave room for emergency responders. 🚒🚑

868 Calls in 30 Days

The Milford Fire Department responded to 868 calls in the last 30 days, averaging nearly 29 calls every day. Those responses included 2 vehicle fires, a building fire with structural involvement, 5 water rescue calls, and more than 500 medical emergencies.

Even with a busy call volume, our members continue to make training a priority. Maintaining proficiency across all facets of the fire service is essential to providing the highest level of service to our community and ensuring our members return home safely.

This month’s training focuses on fireground radio communications and MAYDAY procedures, critical skills for the rare but potentially life-threatening situation involving a lost, trapped, or injured firefighter. It’s a scenario we hope never happens, but one we prepare for nonetheless.

The call volume doesn’t slow down, and neither does the training. Our members continue to work hard through the “dog days” of summer, staying prepared, staying proficient, and staying ready to serve the City of Milford.

FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING...

Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible. Portions of southern Connecticut, including the following areas, Northern Fairfield, Northern New Haven, Southern Fairfield and Southern New Haven. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

A slow-moving low-pressure system will bring multiple rounds
of showers and thunderstorms across the area from late
Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning. Rainfall amounts
are forecast to range from 2 to 5 inches, with localized
higher amounts. The highest amounts at this time are forecast
to be across the Lower Hudson Valley, interior southwest CT
and northeast New Jersey.

There is a high likelihood of seeing an inch plus an hour for
several hours. DO NOT drive through flooded roads and underpasses. Last storm several rescues were made in Milford from passenger vehicles attempting to drive through water. TURN AROUND DON'T DROWN!

Last night, July 23, 2026, the Milford Fire Department proudly recognized 19 members during a Swearing-In Ceremony celebrating their recent appointments and promotions.

Those recognized included Chief of Department Chris Waiksnoris, Assistant Chief Adam Hansen, Battalion Chiefs Jeff Luciano, Brandon Edo, and Dave Tobias; Captains Erik Voroba, Jason Bocchetta, Casey Bertollo and Doug Hannigan, Lieutenant Jason Stacoffe; and Firefighters John Maguire, Milan Spisek, James Bernal III, Justin DiPasquale, Kenneth Lynch, Anthony Coppola, Owen McCabe, Ryan Mulhall, and Matthew Fortier.

Over the past year, these members have earned new positions through their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving the City of Milford. The ceremony provided an opportunity to recognize not only their accomplishments, but also the unwavering support of their families. Family members were invited to pin badges on their loved ones, making the occasion even more meaningful and memorable.

In his opening remarks, Chief Waiksnoris emphasized the importance of teamwork, noting that it takes a team to build a successful fire department, and it takes a team to build successful firefighters and officers. That message was reflected throughout the evening as members, families, and community leaders gathered to celebrate these achievements.

Joining the celebration were State Representatives Kathy Kennedy and Frank Smith, Mayor Rich Smith, members of the Board of Fire Commissioners, numerous City officials, department members, family, and friends.

The Milford Fire Department extends its sincere thanks to everyone who attended and helped make the evening so special. Congratulations to all of our newly appointed and promoted members. Your professionalism, dedication, and continued commitment to serving our community are what make this department strong. We wish you continued success as you lead and serve the City of Milford.

"Boots in the Bay"

Firefighters across the country prep their "hitches" on the bay floor nearby their apparatus. This simple tradition helps ensure rapid, consistent, safe response when the tones go off. Station boots are kicked off, and protective turnout gear is ready to slip on, reducing response time. An empty bay with boots on the floor means Firefighters are "bunkered-up" and out the door in a hurry, protected, to help someone in need. Station boots in the bay aren't forgotten, they're simply left behind while firefighters respond.
