May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office and the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office remind the community that no one needs to navigate mental health challenges alone. Support is always available.

The “Alternative Responses to Reduce Instances of Violence & Escalation” (ARRIVE) initiative, launched in 2021 by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General in partnership with the Department of Human Services and community stakeholders, pairs specially trained law enforcement officers with certified mental health screeners and crisis specialists. These teams respond to 9 1 1 calls involving behavioral health incidents to promote safe, effective de escalation.

National Police Week begins today. The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office and the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office honor the dedicated men and women of law enforcement who risk their lives each day to protect our communities. We also solemnly remember those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Established in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the surrounding week as Police Week, this annual observance provides a meaningful opportunity to recognize fallen officers and express gratitude to those who continue to serve.

In 2026, 403 officers will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. This includes 175 officers who died in the line of duty in 2025, along with 228 officers from previous years whose sacrifices were recently documented and verified.

All 403 names will be formally dedicated during the 38th Annual Candlelight Vigil on the National Mall at 8:00 p.m. EDT on May 13, 2026. Additional information is available through the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
