📜 FROM THE VAULT: VOLUME 1 COMPLETE!
The Milford City Clerk's Office is proud to announce the release of Section 6 (1740–1751), completing Volume 1 of Milford's Town Records. https://www.milfordct.us/1051/Town-Records
This final section takes us into the decade before the French and Indian War and reveals a community that was growing, changing, and preparing for a new era. The records document:
🔔 The purchase and maintenance of Milford's meeting house bell
⛪ Religious debates during the Great Awakening
🏫 Funding for schools in Milford's outlying districts
🌉 Construction of bridges, highways, and public improvements
⚓ Efforts to protect public access to the Gulf Landing
🏛️ Annual elections of town officials and management of town affairs
🤝 Assistance provided to residents in need
One of the most fascinating entries records a 1748 petition by Milford residents seeking relief from supporting the established church and requesting the right to direct their ministerial taxes to the congregation they attended—a local reflection of the religious changes sweeping colonial New England.
With the publication of Section 6, Milford Town Records Volume 1 (1696–1751) is now complete.
Sometimes history isn't just preserved once. In Milford's case, these records were preserved by generations of town clerks, safeguarded for more than 275 years, and are now being preserved again through transcription and digital publication.
Thank you to everyone who has followed and supported the "From the Vault" project. More historic Milford records are on the way.

Milford's history is one of the things that make this a great community to live in. Joe Monte at FOX61 did a great job covering our Friday event about Milford's Revolutionary War Solders! Thank you Joe!

For Memorial Day and ahead of America's 250th anniversary, Milford highlighted its people that sacrificed their lives for the founding of the nation.

🇺🇸 FROM THE VAULT: Revolutionary War Service Register 🇺🇸
Today we released a comprehensive working compilation to date of Revolutionary War service connected to historic Milford and the communities that once formed part of Milford’s original town boundaries.
This project brings together records tied to present-day Milford, Orange, Woodbridge, and portions of West Haven into a single public historical compilation.
After extensive review of published sources, cemetery records, lineage society references, and—most importantly—original Town Records, duplicates were removed, names standardized, and a baseline list established for future research.
One of the most exciting discoveries: the compilation includes 131 individuals not currently appearing on published DAR or SAR lists. These names were added because they appear in original Town Records and contemporary sources documenting militia activity, military payments, wartime support, and Revolutionary-era service to the community.
We are also recognizing Revolutionary War prisoners of war who died after arriving on Milford’s shores and who were buried here. Current research suggests this site may represent one of the largest known Revolutionary War prisoner-of-war burial locations in New England.
History is never truly finished. New discoveries continue to emerge when we return to the original records.
As we prepare to commemorate America’s 250th Anniversary, we invite the public to join us in honoring those who served, sacrificed, and helped shape our nation’s founding.

As Legislative Co-Chair of the Connecticut Town Clerks Association, it is gratifying to see a bill move from introduction to signature. HB 5001, An Act Concerning Absentee Voting for All and Various Other Reforms to the Administration of Elections, was a comprehensive 111-page bill that expands absentee ballot access for all eligible voters and improves ballot tracking from application through election day — helping ensure that citizens do not miss their opportunity to vote.
Today’s bill signing at the historic Old State House marked the culmination of an extraordinary amount of hard work by legislators, election officials, advocates, and municipal leaders across Connecticut. I am proud to have worked alongside so many dedicated individuals committed to strengthening and modernizing our election process.

📜 FROM THE VAULT — NEW HISTORIC TRANSCRIPTION RELEASED 📜
The Milford City Clerk’s Office is proud to release:
Milford CT Town Records 1696–1751
Volume 1 – Section 4 (1720–1729)
This newest transcription provides a fascinating look into Milford nearly 300 years ago as the town managed:
✔ Roads & highways
✔ Ferries & bridges
✔ Schools & taxation
✔ Public order & town government
✔ Land disputes & infrastructure projects
Highlights include records involving the Stratford Ferry, the Gulf Mill Dam dispute, highway realignments, bridge construction, and the development of Milford’s growing colonial community.
These original town meeting records preserve the voices, decisions, and priorities of one of Connecticut’s earliest communities and are now searchable and accessible for residents, historians, genealogists, and researchers.
As always, the transcription preserves the historic spelling and language of the period while helping modern readers better understand Milford’s early history.
Milford was founded in 1639 — and preserving that history remains one of the important responsibilities of the City Clerk’s Office.
