City of Milan Awarded Grant to Bring ADA-Accessible Restrooms to McKellar Park

MILAN, TN – The City of Milan is excited to announce the receipt of a $391,092 Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC). The funding will be used to construct new, fully ADA-accessible restrooms at McKellar Park, marking a significant upgrade for the facility and ensuring an inclusive environment for all park visitors.

The RTP grant, administered by the state, is a matching grant program designed to help communities develop outdoor recreational facilities. Constructing ADA-compliant restrooms is a critical step in the city's ongoing efforts to build McKellar Park from the ground up, ensuring this brand-new facility is welcoming and fully accessible for individuals of all abilities.

"Ensuring our parks are accessible and welcoming to everyone in our community is at the heart of what we do," said Kyle Pearson, Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Milan. "I want to extend my sincere gratitude to Mayor Beasley and Board of Aldermen for their unwavering support in pursuing this grant. Their backing, combined with this funding, allows us to build modern, ADA-compliant restrooms at McKellar Park that will serve our families and visitors for decades to come."

Design and planning for the new restrooms will begin soon, with updates on the construction timeline to be shared with the public as the project progresses.

Celebrating 100 Years of Polk Clark School! 🎉
What an incredible and historic day for Milan as we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of Polk Clark School—a school whose legacy is deeply woven into the history of our community.
I was honored, as Mayor of Milan, to read a City Proclamation recognizing 100 years of Polk Clark School and the generations of students, teachers, families, and community leaders who have been part of its remarkable story.
And Milan certainly knew how to celebrate! One of the largest parades our city has seen filled our streets to honor this important milestone.
Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard to make this centennial celebration worthy of such an important piece of our city's history.

Milan Public Works and Waste Management will be closed Monday, September 7th, in observance of Labor Day.

Waste Management:
Trash collection will operate on a one-day delayed schedule for the remainder of the week, with Friday’s route collected on Saturday, September 12th.

Claw Truck Service:
Milan Public Works will be collecting DEBRIS ONLY this week. Brush and limbs will not be collected.
Debris Collection Schedule:

- Monday residents: Please have your debris piles out for collection on Tuesday by 6:00 A.M.
- Tuesday–Friday residents: Please have your debris piles out by 6:00 A.M. on your normal service day.

We will be working to complete all routes as efficiently as possible and return the claw truck service to its normal schedule.

Hello everyone, Mayor BW Beasley here!

I am absolutely thrilled to share another major step forward for our community! The awarding of this project represents the culmination of years of hard work, persistence, and determination to secure this grant and bring this vision to life.

For decades, the McKellar site has held a special place in Milan - a place where generations of our young people learned, played, and grew. Now, we have the opportunity to honor that history while creating an exciting new future.

We are incredibly grateful to the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation for recognizing the heart of our community and choosing Milan. Through their tremendous generosity, the Foundation is fully funding this project, bringing a world-class transformation to our community at no cost to the City.

The historic McKellar grounds will be transformed into a state-of-the-art space focused on the health, wellness, recreation, and spirit of our citizens.

New amenities will include:
• Fully accessible play areas
• A challenge course and 40-yard dash track
• A children’s bicycle skills area
• Interactive “play pockets”
• Beautiful community pavilions
• Spaces designed for residents of all ages and abilities

This is more than a new park project. It is an investment in our children, our families, and the future of Milan. I cannot wait to see families, friends, and neighbors gathering on these historic grounds and making new memories for generations to come.
