I am running because I believe you deserve an experienced, credible and proven leader who has your best interests in mind. I have been in law enforcement for 22 years. My career started as a Jailer with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office in 2001. I was hired as a Deputy Sheriff in Mille Lacs County in 2005 where I was assigned to the Patrol Division. In 2011, I was assigned to the K9 Unit where
I was assigned as the handler to K9 Yazz. I was in the K9 Unit for nearly 10 years, handling both K9 Yazz and K9 Bongo. During my time as a K9 Handler, I also became a certified K9 trainer and volunteered thousands of hours to train many other K9 teams across MN and the Midwest. I have been invited to instruct at K9 Seminars across the Midwest and I still enjoy volunteering my time to help other K9 Teams succeed and certify. My work as a K9 Handler and Trainer has been recognized locally and nationally. I was promoted to Sgt. in 2019 and assigned to supervise the Patrol Division. I also spent 16 years on the Mille Lacs County SWAT Team with 6 of those years in a Team Leader Position. I am currently the Commander for the SWAT Team. My years in K9 and SWAT really developed my leadership skills and experience as I frequently led units of Deputies into very dangerous and high stress situations to protect our community. One such instance that stands out is a search into a wooded area I led with our SWAT Team and K9 Bongo to locate and capture a suspect who had just exchanged gunfire with a deputy. These experiences have helped to prepare me to take on the leadership roles I am currently serving in. Mille Lacs County needs a proven and experienced leader to serve as your Sheriff. Currently, I am serving as the Chief Deputy . My duties include overseeing the daily operation of all the divisions of the Sheriff's Office to include Patrol, Investigations, Court Security, Jail, Dispatch, Administrative, Boat and Water and Specialized Units (K9, SWAT). I also serve as the Sheriff in his absence. I am a 2019 Graduate of the Minnesota Sheriff's Association and National Command College Institute for Credible Leadership and a 2020 Graduate of the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Leadership in Police Organizations Course. I believe my diverse background in law enforcement combined with my leadership roles and education have shaped me into the best candidate to serve as your Sheriff. If elected your Sheriff, I will keep Mille Lacs County and its law enforcement moving forward in the right direction and continue to make the best use of the resources you the people have given me. The work I have done through my role as the Chief Deputy and my other leadership roles is proof of this commitment to you. The passion and drive I put into my years in the K9 Unit has carried with me into my other roles within the Sheriff's Office. I will continue to protect and respect your Constitutional Rights and will always choose public safety over politics. I believe that investing in our excellent team of public servants will produce the best possible people to serve your needs. I humbly ask for your support on November 8th 2022 and let my experience work for you! Sincerely,
Kyle A. Burton
Chief Deputy
