Look up on May 31!

Skywatchers around the world are getting ready for one of the year’s most talked-about lunar events, the legendary Blue Moon.

Despite its name, the Moon won’t actually appear blue. However, under certain atmospheric conditions, it can take on a soft blue glow in photos and even to the naked eye.

A Blue Moon happens when there are two full moons in the same month, making this a rare celestial event that won’t happen again for several years. Many photographers are already calling it one of the most beautiful moonrises of 2026!

Campground Hosts Needed for the 2026 Camping Season!

Wasatch Mountain State Park is still looking for Campground Hosts for the upcoming camping season.

This volunteer opportunity is perfect for individuals or couples who enjoy the outdoors, meeting new people, and helping create a positive experience for park visitors. Duties include greeting campers, sharing park information, light cleaning and maintenance, and assisting park staff for approximately 25 hours per week.

Hosts receive a complimentary full-hookup campsite during their stay. Preference is given to volunteers available for the full season (May–October), but shorter commitments of at least one month will also be considered.

Interested in volunteering? Please contact Wasatch Mountain State Park at [email protected] for more information.

Wild Wednesday: Great Basin Gopher Snake

This large, non-venomous snake can be recognized by its dark blotchy markings and lighter yellowish coloring. Gopher snakes are mostly active during the day and often spend time hiding in burrows, under rocks, or in crevices.

They are excellent hunters that help control rodent populations by feeding on small mammals, birds, eggs, lizards, and even other snakes—including the occasional rattlesnake. They capture prey by constricting it.

Great Basin Gopher Snakes also play an important role in the food chain, serving as prey for birds of prey, coyotes, foxes, and kingsnakes. Females can lay anywhere from 2–20 eggs in a clutch.

If you spot one on the trail, remember—they are harmless to humans and beneficial to our ecosystem!
